Upcoming Electric Cars To Take Over The Market In India

The government is opening the door to attract the more manufacturers to invest in the EV segment. In response to the government’s willingness, many carmakers have signalled their entrance to the EV market. Here is the list of most awaited EVs to be available in India by 2020.

The government has targeted to turn India into one of the largest markets for electric vehicles in the upcoming years. Manufacturers have prepared to the next turning point of the industry by developing their own electric cars. Some of them have been starting to plan ahead and hinted about their new EVs. Here is the list of noteworthy EVs that will enter the market soon.

1. Tata Tigor EV     

At the Auto Expo 2018, Tata Motors has brought along its upcoming EVs that are the Tata Tiago EV and Tigor EV. The EV models take on the design clues from its sibling hatchback and sedans.

On the Tigor EV, Tata will deploy a 216 Ah 16 V battery and 3-Phase AC motor. It could deliver the power of 39.95bhp and the range is claimed to be 130km. At top speed, Tigor could run 100km per hour. One of the best thing about the Tigor is that it could charge up to 80 percent in 90 minutes. Transmission duty is done by the single speed automatic transmission.

The hatchback Tiago EV will run on an 85 kW electric motor. With this battery pack, the Tiago EV is able to make 200Nm of torque. With a lighter weight, it is able to reach the top speed of 135kmph. For this hatchback, it takes 11 seconds to run from 0-100kph.

Expected Launch Date: Tigor: Rs 10-11 Lakh; Tiago: Rs. Rs. 8-10 lakh

2Hyundai Kona Electric

Hyundai – the second largest car manufacturers in the India market – will also tap into the segment of the EVs with its electric version of the Kona. In 2019, the normal version of the Kona will be launched and following by the release of the electric version in the next year.

The design of Kona is mostly identical to the conventional version with some small twist to differentiate the two. It is expected to deliver the range of around 390km. The price of the EV is likely to rate around Rs. 22 lakh.

Expected Launch Date: 2019

3. Nissan Leaf

Nissan is among the big EV manufacturers in the world. For the India market, Nissan is going to launch its EV Nissan Leaf next year in 2019. It will play an important part in the Nissan production lineup for the Indian-bounded market.

The design of the Leaf is taking inspiration from the Micra hatchback but in a more mature design. Here are some features that might make it to the new Leaf:

  • LED projector headlamps

  • LED daytime running lights

  • Flat-bottom steering wheel with mounted controls

  • Touchscreen infotainment system

On the recent international Leaf, it is packed by two battery options including 24kWh and 30kWh. And the Leaf could reach the range of 220km and 280km respectively. For the new version, it will get a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery that is able to deliver 148 bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque. The range might stay around 242km.

4. Mahindra KUV100 EV

Before all the manufacturers rush into the EV segment, Mahindra is the first one to venture this section in India. They have introduced until now three EV model which includes the e-Verito.

Mahindra is on its way of developing the new electric car which will go under the name KUV100. This car will sit on the entry level in Mahindra’s production lineup. The newly-developed engine will take the spot under the hood. This is hoped to be an improvement from the existing EV Mahindra models.

Expected launch: 2020

Expected price: Rs 8-11 lakhs

5. Mahindra XUV 500

Mahindra plots to launch two EVs by 2020. One is the KUV 100 EV that we have mentioned, the other is the Mahindra XUV 500. This car is expected to have the highest range in the Mahindra XUV 500.

6. Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV

The largest carmaker in India, Maruti Suzuki, will also penetrate into the electric car world by converting one of its popular hatchback Wagon R into an EV model. The WagonR EV will be the first electric vehicles from Maruti.

At the MOVE Global Mobility Summit, Maruti has for the first time introduced a protocol of the WagonR EV. It is expected to bring out the range of around 200 to 220km.

Maruti will collaborate with Toyota to develop WagonR EV version

Suzuki will join Toyota on this journey and its new EV will be developed basing on the technology from Toyota. As you might know, Toyota is the leading carmaker in creating hybrid motors with many successful hybrid cars like the Toyota Camry Ciaz or Toyota Collora. Their knowledge of hybrid technology will be shared with Suzuki to develop superb EV on the affordable price range.

7. Toyota EV

Another product born out of the collaboration of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota is the small Toyota EV. Like the WagonR EV, it will be produced in Maruti plant but developed on Toyota-sourced technology. Until now, all the details of the new EV is still kept under the wraps. It is expected to go on sale by 2020.

8. Renault Kwid EV

Renault is developing the EV version of the Renault Kwid for China – one of the most potential market for EVs. And it is possible that this EV will also approach our land by 2022. If it becomes true, this small and affordable car will be ideal for India market.

9. Audi A3 e-tron

Audi is one of the prominent names that pioneers in the EV segment. They have introduced some EV models and gets the top spots in this section. In the upcoming years, Audi is planning on expanding their EV production and launch more EVs. One of them is the A3 e-tron.

The concept car of the future e-tron has been revealed and showcased in various auto shows including the brand experience hold in Singapore in November. Singapore is the first market in Asian to get this car, and India is thought to be the next destination for this car.

10. BMW i5

BMW has already launched the i8 for India market. And the next EV is the i5. This model will reach our shore in 2019. BMW will surely give us the top-notch performance you could ever dream of in an EV model. The i5 could run from 0 to 100kmp in 4 seconds. The car is able to speed up to 600km and it has the range of 200kph.

11. Jaguar i-Pace

It is a miss not to mention the EV from Jaguar that is planned to be launched at the end of 2018. Two electric motors with 150kW of power in total will power the car. It is said to return the range of 35km. Jaguar is expected to rate around 50 lakh.
