Watch Mahindra Thar Pull A Bus Out Of Sand!

We’ve often seen unfortunate drivers stuck in difficult terrain, like sand or slush, being rescued by veterans in powerful 4x4 vehicle. This story, however, is a little different. Here, we have a full-size passenger bus stuck in loose sand, being rescued by a relatively modest vehicle, a Mahindra Thar. Will the Thar be able to manage such a huge task?

The video above shows the entire incident, which took place in Gujarat last year. In the beginning, we see a tourist bus stuck in the sand by the side of the road. The front of the bus has been hooked onto the back of a Mahindra Thar via a strap. At first, the driver of the Thar tries to gently pull the bus, but fails to do so. After waiting for a while, he gives it another try, this time with much more aggression. At first, the Thar struggles to find its footing, spinning its wheels madly and tugging on the strap. Some onlookers also chime in to help, trying to push the bus out of the ditch. A few seconds later, it manages to rescue the bus.

It should be remembered that while such rescues are extremely tricky, and should only be performed by veterans or professionals. Usually, a heavy blanket is wrapped around the connecting strap or cable. In case the cable snaps, the weight of the blanket would ensure that the cable would fall down, instead of lashing around wildly in a random direction. For additional safety, onlookers shouldn’t be standing close to the vehicles, which sadly was not the case a few time in this video.

As for the Mahindra Thar, this particular model is a CRDe 4x4 model. It is powered by a 2.5-litre, inline-4, turbocharged, common-rail diesel engine. This motor can produce a maximum power of 1-5 PS and a peak torque of 247 Nm. It comes standard with a 5-speed manual transmission and a low ratio gearbox. A four-wheel-drive system is an option though, not a part of the standard equipment.
