We've seen many modified Mahindra Thar models with 6 wheels but this is the first time a modified Mahindra 6x6 can be seen running freely around the Bangalore streets.

While we are not too far from the launch of the new Mahindra Thar that is one of the most essential and awaited launches in India this year. You know, when it comes to the modified cars, Mahindra Thar also tops off the list. Having said that, the Thar is among the most sought-after modified SUV of India and we’ve been giving a lot of examples of modified Mahindra Thar in our previous reports. But how about a modified Thar with 6 wheels? In the past, we’ve seen many Thar models modified with 6 wheels but this is the first time a modified Mahindra 6x6 can run freely around on the Bangalore streets. Check it out here!

The Thar was caught on cam by a biker who has a camera mounted on his helmet. The video shows the entire SUV with six wheels and an extended chassis. The modified Thar features no roof and looks almost like the Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6. With the removed roof, there’s no cabin and no doors this time. The wheel arches have been modified as well and accommodate a set of new tyres.

The other highlighting modifications include aftermarket headlamps that feature LED lamps with integrated turn indicators. Also, the front and rear bumpers of the car have been tweaked with off-road purpose. There’s an off-road-spec bullbar mounted at the front while the tail lamps are also the aftermarket units.

The biggest talking point on the modified Mahindra Thar 6x6 should be an extra axle, adding a good amount of chassis and modifications to the model. What we’re not sure is if the axle here works or not. As you may know, the regular Mahindra Thar comes with a factory-fitted 4x4 system, this means all four wheels receive power when slotted in 4x4 mode. As for the hatchback and sedans, they are often front- or rear-wheel-drive that means there’re only two wheels out of four gets the power.

It is likely that this modified Thar seen in the video are 6x6, which means it may have a third live axle on tap, just like the Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6 model. It’s worth noting that installing a third live axle and sort out the gearing can take a bit fair amount of workmanship. However, we are not 100% sure if this modified car is 6x6 or 6x4.

As for the 6x6, it will be extremely useful for the modified Thar to take off the roads. Even though it’s true that the elongated body might cause some sorts of limitations, like climbing the steep slope, it would be really of help on the marshy and challenging surfaces. With the extra two wheels, the weight of the car will be distributed more evenly on the wheels and the extra traction will be gained to propel the car forward.

There’re four forward-facing seats on the modified that which, sadly, features no seatbelt on boards. Despite having a roll-cage at the top, the effort of saving occupants from the injuries would be useless without the belt. Do note that this modified Mahindra Thar 6x6 is totally illegal to run on the public roads. Modifying the car’s structure is not legal as per the rules that can lead to the car’s seizure by the police. However, you can make it right by having the car certified by ARAI for the road-worthiness but it’s worth noting, such application would take you a long time and effort to make a 6-wheeled Mahindra Thar legally run on the roads.
