This 1998 Maruti Gypsy is on sale for almost 50 per cent of its actual cost. Don't you think, it is too much for a 22-year-old car?

Maruti Gypsy was first launched in the country in December 1985. This compact off-roader is highly loved by the enthusiasts for the great off-roading capabilities and the high scope of modifications it offers. If buying one and trotting off the beaten path was always on your wishlist, then exploring the used car market is the only viable option left now as Maruti pulled the plug on Gypsy’s production in March last year. Interestingly, while surfing through the auto classifieds, we stumbled upon a neat and clean byt 22-year-old copy of the Gyspy that is on sale at almost 50 per cent of its original cost.

This Maruti Gypsy has been restored to almost factory-spec condition.

The Gypsy on sale is a 1998 model year vehicle. Back then, the soft-top version of the SUV was priced at approx Rs. 5.70 lakh (ex-showroom). Therefore, the current asking price of Rs. 2.80 lakh comes up to almost 50 per cent of the car’s original price back when it was bought new. However, Rs. 2.80 lakhs is a bit too much for a car that is nearly 22 years old. That said, the owner claims that the car has been restored to its original condition, which is certainly a good thing. Also, we believe that with the help of on-table negotiations, this Gypsy can be bought at a lower value than its asking price of Rs. 2.80 lakh.

Talking of the mechanicals, it comes with a 1.3L 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol motor. This motor comes equipped with a carburettor and boasts of a rated power output of 61 PS. The gearbox is a 5-speed manual unit. Also, the Gypsy was offered with a 4X4 drivetrain as standard with a low-range transfer case. The current owner of the car has clocked a little more than 45,000 km on the odo.

The owner has also added a 'SUZUKI' mascot on the bonnet.

This Gujarat registered car looks clean in the pictures and is free from any visible dents or scratches. Also, in case anything goes does go wrong, the parts of Gypsy are readily available in the market and are quite cheap, too. However, Maruti would soon launch the next-generation Gypsy in the form of an 5-door version of the latest Suzuki Jimny Sierra. We recommend giving it a really good look unless you're on a tight budget and want a capable off-roader for a much lower price than waht the upcoming model would command.
