Tata Motors to ramp-up capacity at Sanand plant by March 2019

Tata Motors has recently announced production ramp-up plans for its Sanand, Gujarat plant in the fiscal year 2019 to meet the growing demand for Tiago and Tigor.

Tata Motors has currently been witnessing an increasing demand for its passenger vehicles. Hence, the manufacturer has announced production ramp-up plans for its Sanand, Gujarat plant in the financial year 2019. 

Since its inception in June 2010, the Sanand plant has rolled out over 4,60,000 units so far. Accordingly, with 100 percent capacity utilisation, the Sanand plant has a manufacturing capacity of 1,54,000 units per annum.

To meet its product expansion plans, the carmaker is currently mapping out its modular architecture plans as well as distribute the passenger-vehicle manufacturing responsibilities between its Pune and Sanand facilities. 

Speaking at the Sanand plant today, Mayank Pareek, president, Passenger Vehicle Business, Tata Motors, said

 “We at Tata Motors have been working aggressively towards our core strategy of Turnaround 2.0, aiming to ‘Win sustainably in PVs’. A lean manufacturing process plays a key role in our growth strategy, enabling the Sanand plant to contribute around 60 percent of the overall PV production. The plant has evolved to become a modern, state-of-the-art facility and is playing a vital role, meeting aspirations of Tiago and Tigor customers. The plant has already achieved WCQ 3 level in quality standards and we are extremely proud of this achievement.”

To develop the automotive industry in the state of Gujarat, Tata Motors spread over 1,100 acres at the Sanand plant. Building from a single-model (Nano) plant in 2010, the plant has emerged as a multi-model facility and proves to be one of the most technologically advanced plants in India so far.

In addition to the number of facilities, in the past two years, the production scale in terms of labor force has increased by 80 percent, to around 4,500 staff. At present, the plant employs nearly 100 percent of the white collar staff from Gujarat against the mandated requirement of 85 percent.

Possessing a flexible assembly line, the plant currently manufactures Tiago hatchback, the Nano, and Tigor sedan in 21 variants with 150 vehicle combinations. 

Those engines as the Revotorq 1.05-litre Diesel Revotron 1.2-litre Petrol (manual and automatic transmission), the Revotorq 1.05-litre Diesel, the 624cc MPFI petrol (manual and AT) and the 1.2-litre NGTC petrol (manual and AT) are also produced in the plant.

It also produces engines like the Revotron 1.2-litre Petrol (manual and automatic transmission), the Revotorq 1.05-litre Diesel, the 624cc MPFI petrol (manual and AT) and the 1.2-litre NGTC petrol (manual and AT).

The Sanand plant also produced the first electric passenger vehicle for commercial use in the form of the Tigor EV and continues to support deliveries of the EESL order.

Recently, the plant has been using 30-35% of renewable energy from total power consumption. The plant has commissioned 2MW of rooftop solar panels and off-site wind power mills with the capacity of 9MW.
