Air conditioner system is always considered to be one of most advanced equipment throughout car’s operation processes, and it plays a very important role in satisfying car users’ demand. Taking advantages of the air conditioner is not simply an act of switching it on or off, but it requires a skilful understanding of how the AC system operates to avoid unfortunate technical errors.

11 Good Habits to Improve the AC Efficiency

Air conditioner system is always considered to be one of most advanced equipment throughout car’s operation processes, and it plays a very important role in satisfying car users’ demand. On a sunny and scorching day, air conditioner (AC) is indispensable if anyone has to be on the road. Taking advantages of the air conditioner is not simply an act of switching it on or off, but it requires a skilful understanding of how the AC system operates to avoid unfortunate technical errors. So how should drivers use the car’s air condition effectively and economically?

1. Thoroughly understand the AC system’s operating principle

The AC system has its own process of operating. At first, the compressor in the car which is connected with the engine via a belt band absorbs cryogenics in gas form (from the gas container) and compresses it at high pressure. When compressed, the temperature of cryogenics is increased and pushed into an outdoor unit (OU) located in the car’s front trunk near the grille and a fan. In the outdoor unit, cryogenics is liquefied and transferred to the expansion valve (or throttle valve) where the pressure is suddenly decreased. After that, cryogenics again is gasiform and transferred to the indoor unit (IU). It absorbs the heat from the outside environment and causes the temperature to drastically reduce. The cold air which can be the wind from outside, from the cabin or from both, is blown outside through the fan.

The operating principle of the AC system actually is a complex process

2. Identify the AC system’s common errors and solution.

If you are a careful driver, you should pay attention as well as be aware of common errors and solutions to them to ensure your car has a normal AC system.

a. The wind from AC is not cool enough and may have a  strange smell.

When the air conditioner is poorly cooled, the first cause may be that the temperature from the OU has not reached the maximum level, and the second one, due to the wind blowing through the OU, doesn’t run strongly and timely enough; therefore, the wind itself cannot adapt to the abrupt increase in air temperature in the car. Consequently, the AC works as there are some obstacles on the way of delivering the wind, and also, causes an unpleasant odour.

Solution: If the cause is due to poor performance of the outdoor unit, drivers will need a specialist to diagnose and fix it immediately. If it is from the poor wind, drivers may need to check air vent or air filter whether there are any strange objects or some small dead animals stuck in these vents.

b. The air from the AC system is only cool for only a while.

This is a common phenomenon in cars that have been used for many years. An explanation for this phenomenon is that the OU has too much dust. In fact, the fan also absorbs the dust from outside, which is the reason why the OU is quickly dirty and it results in the deficient process of cooling the wind. Additionally, the out-of-order may also be a cause for this occurrence.

Solution:

c. The AC keeps automatically turning on/off.

Turning on or off the AC is controlled by sensors and switches.  The common ground of this problem is that the gas pressure in the system exceeds the recommended level.

When an abnormal level of pressure is detected in the cooling process, the sensor system will stop the cooling part to protect other parts in the system.

Solution:  To find the best reason and answer, taking the car to a trusted service centre for advice and repair because drivers may not have specialized equipment.

3. Do not turn the AC on if the car has not been started up.

A  big problem can happen if the driver opens the AC before the engine is started. The AC battery will be suddenly activated to run the fan, and if it happens frequently, there will be a remarkable decline in the life of the battery. Similarly, if the AC is running but the car’s power is off, it exerts a bad influence on the battery’s longevity.  Also, there are other results such as exceeding consuming energy, slowly cooling the wind or decreasing the lifespan of the cooling system.

So, what drivers should do in this situation are operating the car’s engine about 5 minutes before turning the AC on as well as adjusting the appropriate wind level, and stopping completely the engine after turning the AC off.

4. Release the hot air out of the car.

In the car, there are a lot of parts made of plastics. These parts in hot weather will emanate a nasty smell; therefore, it is essential to open the doors, lower the glass windows and turn the fan on about 5 to 10 minutes before the car’s engine is operated, so that the atmosphere inside the car becomes airy. After getting on the car and turning the engine on, it is time to open the AC and adjust appropriately the wind level. However, there is an important notice for drivers which is that they have to close absolutely the windows to avoid the cool air to spread outside, or else it will consume a ton of fuel.

5. Adjust appropriately the wind level.

It is a good way for the AC system to work efficiently if the fan is adjusted in a proper way. If the fan is too powerful, it will cause a large consumption of fuel and annoyance for people inside the car. Also, it is not comfortable either if the fan is too weak. Therefore,  users should adjust the cooling temperature gradually and should not modify the fan at the highest cooling level, which can lead the OU to work exceedingly.

Besides, the doors of the fan should be regulated properly to avoid direct cool air to passengers’ faces, which is not good for health. It is inadvisable, too, to focus the fan on the glasses because of the condensation.

6. Maintain and clean the AC regularly.

The car’s AC should have a regular maintenance and cleaning, which can bring about a lot of benefits, such as:

  • Ensuring the efficiency of the AC system.

  • Increasing the system’s longevity and simultaneously, detecting errors if needed.

  • Protecting drivers and their families’ health.

  • Saving energy and fuel.
