When the rich people have way too much money on their hands, they would leave the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce in a corner and let them rust with time. The narrative may be hard to believe, but this is what is actually happening in China.

While the majority of people are thinking back and forth, mulling over which second-hand car to purchase, there are some privileged folks who happen to have too many luxury cars on their hands that throwing away a Ferrari is no big deal. Such precious vehicles would sit at a random corner of the nowhere, covered in a thick carpet of dust and layers of garbage or parking tickets. While that is the case for many cars of some ridiculously rich people in China, some luxury cars lie hidden among the lush shrubbery of parking lots because they were impounded, suspected to be the assets of criminals who are under investigation. In big cities such as Chengdu or Hongkong, where the newer is the better and being the trend-setter is the best trend there is, hundreds and thousands of extremely expensive cars have been abandoned for years, and some are so old that they are ready to be turned into real garbage. Because of complicated political and cultural reasons, there are bound to be many more supercars to be left to rust and rot. Let’s take a quick look at some of the most impressive vehicles at these so-called “car graveyards”.

1. Ferrari Enzo

Ferrari is the car that every person who loves car dreams of. Therefore, just the sheer thought of throwing a Ferrari away is simply unfathomable. More than that, the car that is abandoned is not any Ferrari, it is the iconic Ferrari Enzo.

Released in 2002, Ferrari Enzo was the first car of the new generation of Ferrari. The name of the car was taken after Enzo Ferrari, the automaker’s founder. That fact is enough to show us how important and iconic this car is.

Ferrari Enzo uses a lot of advanced Formula One technologies such as carbon-fibre body, carbon fibre-reinforced silicon carbide ceramic composite disc brakes and electrohydraulic shift transmission. The Enzo is powered by an F140 B V12 engine that produces 660 PS (651 bhp; 485 kW) at 7,800 rpm and 657 Nm; 485 lbf⋅ft (67 kg⋅m) at 5,500 rpm.

There were only 400 cars of this model on Earth and how the hell this car ended up in China in the first place is the question that we may not be capable of answering, not to mention who in their right mind would leave such a beautiful supercar be a dust collector.

2. Toyota Supra MKIV

If you think that Toyota only manufactures average cars with an average performance for average people, you are dead wrong. The Japanese automaker does create sports cars and grand tourers, one prime example of which is the Toyota Supra.

Toyota Supra MKIV was the fourth-generation of Supra and it was in production around the turn of the century. The car, like the Ferrari Enzo, also utilised the Formula One technology, but this time was with its unique braking system. In fact, the braking system of Supra MKIV was so impressive that it claimed the top spot in the 1990s, with a record of 70 mph (113 km/h) -0 braking distance of 149 ft (45 m).

While we are not sure whether this Toyota Supra was a Japanese MKIV or an export MKIV, which, if you may not know, the engines of the two are completely different, we are certain that any car lovers will feel a pang in the heart to see the iconic grand tourer of the 20th century end up in a car graveyard in Hongkong.

3. Bentley Continental GT

Ah we feel such a pain when we are writing this article right here and now, looking at the picture of a Bentley Continental GT forsaken at a Chengdu’s car graveyard, being surrounded by fellow luxury vehicles. The exuberant trees and weeds around the deserted cars and motors create such an ironic juxtaposition that may not happen in many places else on the planet.

Bentley Continental GT is the most affordable offering from the British manufacturer of luxury cars, but mind you, by most affordable, we mean a starting price of Rs. 2 crores.

It is reported that the grand tourer was sent to the car graveyard because its used-to-be owner was a criminal awaiting trial. According to Chinese law, if the owner is found guilty, the Continental GT will be auctioned off by the state officials. Till then, the car will continue its life under the sun and rain among shrubbery like this.

4. Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III

Now, back to Hongkong where another ill-fated iconic car from the previous century is found, and it is no other than a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III.

Silver Cloud III was a uber-luxury car produced by Rolls-Royce from 1955 to 1966. In the 20th century, when it was introduced at a Paris salon, it was displayed on a special stand, denoting that only a privileged few would be able to purchase it. It was also the car of choice for top superstars of that time such as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. If a vintage Silver Cloud was fortunate enough to be a birthday present from Jay-Z to Beyonce in this era, this one spends its forsaken life collecting dust in an abandoned open garage.

5. Lotus Europa S

As stated before, in Hongkong, many people have the mentality that is somewhere along the line of: the newer is the better, so the number of luxury cars and legendary cars that are deserted here is simply insane. However, another luxury car that we consider is worth an honorary mention in this list is a Lotus Europa S, and it is weird that this car is abandoned at a car graveyard and disassembled to its current state because it was in production from 2006 to 2010, which is relatively recent.

Lotus Europa S was a two-seat mid-engined sports car and was designed to be more comfortable, modern, and overall suitable for today’s customers. Though it received not-so-good comments and reviews from car enthusiasts, saying that it paled in comparison with its predecessors, Lotus is still a name that is much respected in the automobile industry. Seeing a Lotus car in an almost unrecognisable state is just sad.
