Nissan did once consider producing a sub four-meter sedan. However, the plan didn't go well. What is the reason for Nissan to drop this plan?

Nissan did consider jumping into the segment of sub 4-meter sedan in India which is already a competitive playground. The main players in the segment are Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Volkswagen Ameo, and the Ford Aspire. The first two names are considered the strongest competitors, whereas the other two feels more sluggish in sales.

The plan for a sub-four-meter compact sedan was delayed and Nissan was concentrated on the introducing of the Kicks in early 2019.

The concept design of the new car was developed by the Nissan’s Chennai-based team. However, after considering the prosperity of the plan, Nissan decided to drop the plan. The market for sub-compact is already a well-developing and tough segment which is shared between many strong and competitive brands.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire was the targeted rivals for Nissan's concept for its sub four-meter sedan

Alfonso Albaisa, the Executive Design Director of Nissan Group, said "We have had India as our focus for a long time and of course we study and see the possibility but the sub 4-metre market is tough. It’s not like you can come in and success is guaranteed and a company naturally weighs 'is that where we want to focus?' or should we be joining the SUV revolution that is in India today."

The toughness of the game is one persuasive enough to doom the future of Nissan sub four-meter sedan, not to mention that it would take a sheer challenge to design a good sub-compact sedan. Whereas, the segment for sub four meter SUV seems to be an easier path for Nissan. There is no wonder why Nissan decided to develop an SUV instead of a sedan.

That’s why we will soon see the debut of Nissan’s new SUV instead of a sedan.
