Despite being quite heavily camouflaged, the tested mule did reveal quite a few details about the upcoming Thar. The new Thar will be considerably wider and even longer than the previous model. However, some of the other exterior features are expected to be borrowed from the current model including
Jeep-like 7-slot grille
Round headlamps
3-door format
Removable soft-top roof
Decklid
High-mounted plastic wheel arches
Temporary tail lamps
While the interior of the new Thar has not been disclosed by the spying images, it is anticipated to sport some upgrades such as a new dashboard, a new driving wheel and more advanced safety features.
A piece of AVL emission testing equipment is attached to the testing model, indicating that Mahindra is possibly testing the new platform and its mechanics. It is expected to be underpinned by Mahindra’s new modular ladder-frame chassis which was showcased with the Marazzo MPV earlier. Underpinned by this platform, the Thar will substitute the traditional school leaf spring-type suspension setup in the rear with a multi-link system with coil springs, which is also adopted in the Maruti Jimny and the Force Gurkha.

Under the hood of the facelifted Thar may be a 2.2L diesel motor also powering the Scorpio, which is good for 140PS of maximum power and 320Nm of peak torque. The transmission duties are undertaken by a 6-speed MT gearbox. With this power output, it would rival the Force Gurkha Xtreme, which uses the 2.2L OM616 diesel engine sourced from Mercedes which also generate 140PS against 320Nm.

Although the home-grown automaker has not revealed the exact launch date of the new vehicle, we can expect that the new-gen Thar will be introduced to the Indian auto market in 2020. The existing model is priced in the range of Rs 6.64 lakh for the base variant to Rs 9.42 lakh for the top variant. Once launched in India, the facelifted one is expected have a price which is over the outgoing one by 1 or 2 lakh.
