The upcoming Tata Safari will not feature a 4X4 system. It’ll derive power from a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine.

Tata Motors is recently brought back the Safari name badge in the Indian market. The all-new Tata SUV is the flagship car in the company’s stable. It was showcased early this year at the 2020 Auto Expo as Tata Gravitas. The all-new Tata SUV is also known as the 7-seater Harrier. The new Tata Safari is meant to appeal “those who are socially active, fun-loving, travel in groups seeking out unique experiences and adventures”.

The new SUV is based on the company’s OMEGA (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture) platform, which also underpins Tata Harrier. This modular platform is compatible with distinctive body types, electric power plant and an AWD system. Nevertheless, Tata Motors does not have any all-wheel-drive system for a monocoque chassis-based SUV like the all-new Tata Safari. For now, the new Tata Safari is being offered only with a front-wheel-drive system. The SUV might get a 4X4 trim at a later stage but there's no concrete infon on this yet. The last 4X4 SUV offered by the automaker was Hexa, which was a body-on-frame SUV. In fact, even the Safari Storme had a 4x4 system. The all-new Safari retains some of the design cues of the original model like an aggressive front-end, high seating arrangement, pronounced hood and stepped roof. A 4x4 system, however, is something that has not been carried over and the company certainly doesn't have any immediate plans to bring in the 4WD mechanism.
