Just a few weeks back, Hyundai Motors brought in the updated version of Verna for the Indian market. When it comes to the exterior, interior and under the bonnet, the 2020 Hyundai Verna did not simply get a ‘cosmetic surgery’. Apart from the styling revisions and updated equipment, the Verna also receives a massive change to the powertrain system with the arrivals of entirely-new engine options. That said, the outgoing 1.6-litre petrol engine as well as the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre diesel powertrains have been removed from the range, making room for the introduction of all-new BSVI-compliant 1.5-litre petrol & diesel motors along with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit.
After days of waiting, the fuel efficiency figures of the 2020 Hyundai Verna have been finally revealed to the enthusiasts. Interestingly, the ARAI-rated fuel economy numbers of the new Verna are much higher than the internal ones that are claimed by the company. Now IndianAuto wants to know how the 2020 Hyundai Verna compares with old model in terms of fuel mileage and we’ll analyse.
As for the petrol configurations, the outgoing BS4-spec Verna came with a 1.6-litre petrol mill that was tuned to produce a maximum power of 123 HP and was available with either a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed automatic unit. Comparably, the BS6 Hyundai Verna’s new 1.5-litre gasoline engine, can make a lesser 115 horsepower but it plays a smarter trump card over the earlier engine in terms of fuel mileage. Talking about the manual variants, the 2020 Hyundai Verna’s 1.5-litre petrol mill gets a fuel economy rating of 17.7 kmpl as per ARAI that is slightly higher than the earlier car’s 17.4 kmpl.
In the meantime, the arrival of a smaller engine combined with a CVT has even given the 2020 Verna a bigger slice in the fuel efficiency pie. The petrol-AT Verna gets an ARAI-rated mileage figure of up to 18.45 kmpl that is also substantially higher than the older sedan’s 15.9 kmpl.

Most importantly, the Verna’s newly-added 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine should be the icing on the cake here. Being none other than a sporty addition to the Verna’s lineup, the 1.0-litre turbo version of the Verna stands out as the most fuel-efficient of the petrol offerings by returning an ARAI-certified figure of 19.2 kmpl.
To recap, 2017 Hyundai Verna was offered with a 1.4-litre diesel engine solely paired with a 6-speed MT and a 1.6-litre oil burner that came linked to a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed torque converter unit. While the updated Verna’s new 1.5-litre diesel engine stands in between the two outgoing mills in terms of power output, it certainly goes up against the outgoing 1.6-litre engine in terms of frugality.
Specifically, the BS6 Verna’s 1.5-litre oil engine can deliver up to 25 kmpl (for the manual variant) and 21.3 kmpl (for the automatic version), which are a lot better than the BS4 Verna’s mileage figures of 24.7 kmpl and 21 kmpl, respectively.
While the Indian buyers are waiting for the launch of 2020 Honda City in India as well as the introduction of the turbo versions of VW Vento and Skoda Rapid, it will be very interesting to see if the 2020 Hyundai Verna wins or loses over the competition regarding the fuel efficiency. Currently, the 2020 Hyundai Verna is priced at around Rs 9.4- 15.23 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
