After the success of the Hyundai Venue and the Grand i10 Nios in the Indian auto market, the South Korean auto manufacturer has had a great start to the new year with the introduction of the Hyundai Aura at the beginning of 2020. The new model serves as a replacement for the Hyundai Xcent and borrow design traits from the Grand i10 Nios. The new sedan has been launched in the country with the potential to become a bestseller in the sub-4-metre sedan segment, maybe even reinvigorate their popularity in our market.
Volkswagen Ameo was launched in India in 2016 and was the first sub-4-metre sedan from the German automaker. The brand has created a certain amount of prestige and respect in the country, owing to its VW's racing and motorsports presence in India. In its three-year run in India, the Ameo has received various additions in a bid to attract more customers. Now, VW Ameo has a strict competition from another rival, the Hyundai Aura.
Let’s go through our Hyundai Aura vs Volkswagen Ameo comparison to see which one offers more value in the Indian market.

The Hyundai Aura and the VW Ameo generally level with each other in terms of the dimensions with equal length and wheelbase. There are differences between the width and the height of the two sedans, but the differences are just marginal.
The interior of the Hyundai Aura was kept under the wraps till now, but after its launch, a closer look inside the car reveals it comes with same interior elements as the Grand i10 Nios hatchback. Not just that, Aura shares many features with the Grand i10 Nios. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment setup which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless charging, an Arkamys sound unit, and a digital instrument console with driver information display are the features that the sedan and hatchback siblings share. However, the major difference is that the off-white pad seen on the Nios now wears a shade of tan in the Aura.
In the meanwhile, the VW Ameo is packed with a flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel with piano black inserts. The most noteworthy feature of the Ameo is its new touchscreen infotainment unit with USB, AUX-in, Bluetooth and reverse parking camera connectivity. The Ameo is also the first sub-4-metre sedan in India to offer the MirrorLink feature with its infotainment system.
The Volkswagen Ameo is equipped with some top-notch features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with various connectivity functions.
Inspired by the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, the Hyundai Aura comes with a very familiar front. Based on the company’s new “Sensuous Sportiness” styling philosophy, the Hyundai Aura gets an aggressive front with a black trapezoidal grille and integrated boomerang-shaped LED DRLs. The projector fog lamps and massive central air dam also contribute to the aggressiveness of the subcompact sedan. On the side profile, the car comes with a coupe-inspired roofline and sporty wheel arches. Only the top-spec variant of the car is offered with 15-inch diamond-cut alloy rims. The rear experiences remarkable alterations with a sculpted boot lid and elegant wrap-around taillights.
The Hyundai Aura borrows numerous design cues from the Grand i10 Nios.
Like the Hyundai Aura, the design of the VW Ameo is identical to that of its sibling, the Polo, but with some different features. Specifically, the front-end reminds us very much of the Polo with a lot of similar features. These include a multi-slat grille, dual-barrel headlights, lifted front bumper with a chrome strip, and static cornering lights on the fog lamps. The side profile takes many design cues from the Polo with an incorporated boot and a set of 15-inch alloy wheels. The rear comes with faux-LED graphics in the taillights and an integrated spoiler.
The Volkswagen Ameo, on the other hand, is identical to the Polo as regards the exterior design.
Regarding the petrol version, Aura gains a clear benefit over Ameo since it receives its power from a 1.0-litre turbo petrol motor with 100 PS, which far exceeds the 75 PS produced by the 1.0-litre gasoline unit of the Ameo. Actually, the petrol engine of the Ameo is underpowered in comparison with most of its competitors. Moreover, the former is also powered by a 1.2-litre gasoline burner, which is absent in the latter. A totally different case happens to the diesel version as the 1.5-litre oil burner is much more powerful than the 1.2-litre turbo diesel unit of the Aura. The buyers of both of the cars can choose between manual and automatic transmission options.

As can be seen in the table, the Hyundai Aura is offered with more powertrain options than its rival. Noteworthily, all of the three engines which power the Hyundai Aura comply with the upcoming BS-VI emission standards. On the other hand, the Volkswagen Ameo needs engine updates or to be discontinued no later than April 2020 since it is not compliant with the new emission standards which will come into effect by this time. This gives the Aura a clear advantage over its rival.
