With the BS6 deadline a mere month away, Hyundai has decided to update its sub-4-metre SUV with BS6-compliant engines. While the petrol engines are the same with a few upgrades, the older 1.4-litre diesel engine has now been discontinued, making way for a newer 1.5-litre motor.
This new mill is the same one that does duty on the Kia Seltos, although it has been reworked slightly to produce less power and torque. Where the Seltos gets a VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) to boost power, the Venue only gets a regular, fixed-geometry turbo. This also helps keep the manufacturing costs down, as VGTs cost a lot more than regular turbochargers. The same principle was seen in Fiat’s 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine. It had a regular version that produced 75 PS of max power, and a VGT version that produced 90 PS of power.

The 1.5-litre diesel in the 2020 Hyundai Venue BS6 generates 100 PS of max power and 230 Nm of peak torque. The same engine produces 115 PS and 250 Nm in the Kia Seltos, which is considerably more. As for the other two engines in the Hyundai Venue, they offer the same power and torque output as the BS4-compliant version. The 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol is good for 83 PS and 113 Nm. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol can push out 120 PS and 173 Nm. These three engines are also expected to power the upcoming next-generation Hyundai i20. The price list of the new model (petrol variants) is as follows:

The Hyundai Venue competes with Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, and Maruti Brezza. Out of all these, only the Maruti SUV is offered without a diesel engine. India’s largest manufacturer will now only offer the Brezza with one engine option, a 1.5-litre petrol with mild-hybrid assistance. Earlier, the Brezza was only offered with a 1.3-litre diesel engine.
