The Mahindra Alturas G4 is projected to be introduced to the Indian auto market on November 24, 2018, and will become the flagship product of the home-grown carmaker. It is the next gen of the outgoing version of the Ssangyong Rexton W whose production was cancelled in 2014 after 4-year stagnant sales. Let’s discover how the forthcoming Alturas G4 resembles and differs from the outgoing model in terms of exterior and interior features as well as mechanical specifications.
In terms of the outside, the Alturas G4 will come with a sharper design than the Rexton. The grille in the front of the former will get vertical chrome slats against the horizontal ones on its forerunner. While the Alturas G4 is going to feature horizontal headlamps, the Rexton was packed with vertical ones. Although the fog lights equipped on both cars are horizontal, the Alturas G4 will have slim LEDs whereas the Rexton W still kept the standard bulbs. The general stance of both cars is not so different from each other, but the Alturas will look more muscular because of its sharper styling. In the rear, the horizontal LED tail lamps on the Alturas G4 will replace the vertical tail lamps of the former Rexton. Overall, the new Alturas is likely to be equipped with much more LED equipment on the outside than its counterpart.

As regards the dimensions, the Alturas G4 will be 95mm longer, 60mm wider and will have a 30mm longer wheelbase than the Rexton W. However, the Rexton W had a minimally higher ground clearance and has a greater height than the Alturas (because of the taller roof rails on the former). The greater dimensions of the Alturas G4 means that it will offer the customers a more amber cabin with a more comfortable travel experience, especially for the passengers sitting in the third rows.

The Alturas G4 will get a brand-new, reduced 2.2L diesel motor, which is about 500cc smaller than the 2.7L unit on the Rexton W. Nevertheless, the former will still be more powerful with a maximum power of 181PS and a peak torque of 4000rpm, 16PS and 60Nm more than the latter and is ready for the BSVI. In terms of the mileage, thanks to the larger motor, the Rexton was marginally more fuel-efficient than its successor. While the transmission duties on the Alturas G4 will be carried out by a Mercedes-Benz-sourced seven-speed automatic gearbox, the power was provided for Rexton via a five-speed manual and automatic unit.
The Rexton was available in two variants before its production was cancelled in 2016. It was priced between Rs 24.25 lakh and Rs 25.99 lakh. The Alturas G4 has not appeared in the Indian auto market (projected to be on November 24, 2018), so it is too early to compare the prices of the two vehicles. However, the Alturas, with all of these premium features and impressive performance, is expected to be priced more than the Rexton by Rs 4 lakh - 5 lakh, taking the likes of To Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Isuzu mu-X, Honda CR-V and Ford Endeavour.
