Maruti Swift, Baleno, WagonR Continues to Dominate the Indian Automobile Market

Hatchbacks are the best-selling body type in India. Maruti Swift, Baleno and WagonR are the top-selling hatchbacks.

As per recent reports by automobile insights and analytics provider, Jato Dynamics India says that SUVs accounted for around 34 per cent of all passenger car sales in the first quarter of this year. While many consumers in India are preferring to buy SUVs, but they are still not the top-selling vehicle body type in India in the first quarter of 2021. As per data shared by Jato India, which calculated sales contribution based on the body type of the vehicle. The research found that hatchbacks lead the way, accounting for around 42 per cent of total passenger vehicle sales.

While the sedans and MPVs contributed 12 per cent each to the total passenger vehicle sales in the first quarter of this year. In spite of hatchbacks being the top-selling body type in India, we have not surfaced the launch single new hatchback in the country in the first quarter of 2021. The carmakers were still introducing new SUVs in the Indian market. In the past few months, we saw some major SUV launched like Tata Safari, Renault Kiger and Citroen C5 Aircross. Jato Dynamics also said that the automakers are planning to introduce at least 10 more SUVs this year because the demand for SUV body style is constantly rising. Some of the major SUV launches are lined up for coming months likes Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700 and all-new Mahindra Scorpio.

Talking about hatchbacks, Maruti Swift is the top-selling car in India. Recently, the automaker introduced a new facelift model of the car, which gets subtle cosmetic and feature updates on the outside and inside. Mechanically, it derives power from a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which develops 89bhp of power and 113 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are done by a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT. It gets retailed at a starting price of Rs 5.73 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base trim and goes all the way up to Rs 8.41 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top-spec variant.
