The MG Hector is a rebadged version of the Baojun 530, manufactured by the tripartite Chinese joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling. According to MG Motor, the SUV has been named after Prince Hector of Troy, and its name has also been inspired by the Trojan, warrior hero. It also takes the inspiration from the Royal Hector biplane used by the Royal Air Force during the 1930s and represents the necessary qualities of a vehicle such as “Strong, Bold, Trustworthy and Dependable”.

The Hector name has many interesting origins
The heavily camouflaged test mules do not reveal much but do hint at some of the MG Hector’s characteristics. The SUV will get a bold stance and a masculine look. From the images, we can realise some of the exterior features of the MG Hector SUV:

Unlike the Baojun 530, which offers two versions: five-seater and seven-seater one, once launched in India, the MG Hector will be available with only a five-seater version. However, it is reported that the seven-seater and eight-seater versions are being developed and will be ready to be introduced soon. Under the hood of the Hector SUV will be a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.0L turbocharged diesel unit, both of which will be made compliant with the BSVI norms ahead before this set of standards take effect.

The MG Hector will be manufactured at a GM- previously owned plant in Halol, Gujarat. It will have a lower price than the Jeep Compass, which has an initial cost of INR 15.39 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This SUV will be the first vehicle launched by MG in India and is expected to become a formidable competitor of other cars in the same segment such as the Tata Harrier, the Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass.
