Mahindra XUV500 and Tata Harrier are two runners in the mid-size SUV segment. At the base variant, Tata Harrier XE is priced at Rs. 12.7 lakh. On the other hand, the Mahindra XUV500’s entry-level W3 undercuts the Harrier at Rs. 12.31 lakh. The close prices of the two models make them true rivals.

Previously, Mahindra XUV500’s entry-level version was the W4. The new base variant was recently launched to offer a competitively-priced option, hence attracting more buyers. Mahindra just came up with the idea after witnessing the increasing competition in the segment, especially after the launch of the Tata Harrier in January this year. Obviously, the introduction of the new entry-level XUV500 is meant to challenge the Harrier.
In order to lower the price and undercut its rivals, Mahindra XUV500 W3 has given up on some exterior features that were previously available on the then-entry-level W4 variant. For example, the plastic-cladding arches and blacked-out pillar and the plastic cladding on the running board have been given a miss. On the other hand, the base variant Harrier still keeps the black cladding, which clearly boosts the sporty and muscular look of the Harrier. Compared with the higher variant, the XE lacks chrome accents.
While the objective behind introducing the Mahindra XUV500 W3 was to attract buyers with a low starting price, the company has still made sure to offer a sufficiently long list of standard features, including projector headlamps, micro-hybrid start/stop button, power windows, adjustable steering wheels, power ORVMs, 6-way adjustable driver seat, manual AC, and keyless entry. The exterior features include follow-me headlamps, rear defogger and remote tailgate opening. The safety equipment on offer includes dual airbags, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD and four-wheel disc brakes as standard. Even the Tata Harrier XE is equipped with all the aforementioned features.
Mahindra XUV500 W3 receives power from a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 6-speed manual transmission. This engine outputs a maximum power of 155 bhp and a peak torque of 360 Nm. On the other hand, the Tata Harrier XE is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The maximum power and torque on offer are pegged at 140 bhp and 350 Nm, respectively. The entry versions of both the SUVs are available only in an FWD layout. To sum it up, the Tata Harrier XE has slightly more to offer but the Mahindra XUV500 XE gains an advantage due to its lower pricing and the seven-seat layout.
