Hyundai Motor India Ltd has recently announced that they are planning to introduce a new gearbox option for Venue that will be marketed as iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission). It will be offered with the 1.0-litre turbo petrol trim of the SUV that produces a power output of 120bhp. Hyundai Venue will be India’s first car to feature clutchless manual transmission. The same gearbox option will also be offered on the Kia Sonet. During the launch of Tucson facelift, the automaker confirmed that they are planning to introduce the new iMT transmission on some of its other models. Till now, the carmaker has not confirmed which will be the next Hyundai model to feature this technology. However, one can expect it to be offered on the the all-new Creta and the recently updated Verna.

The upcoming new-gen Hyundai i20 and ongoing Aura compact sedan could also get the iMT. Like Hyundai Venue, it is expected to be offered with the turbocharged petrol trims of Creta and Verna. Other Hyundai’s powertrain options will be offered with the new iMT transmission in the near future. Talking about the iMT, the new gearbox system features an ‘intentional sensor’ with the gear level which notifies the transmission control unit when the driver is about to shift gears. The transmission control unit transfer signals to a hydraulic actuator to lay off the clutch plate during a gear shift.

iMT is a two-pedal, clutchless system, which is claimed to increase derivers convenience without compromising on fuel efficiency and performance. The upcoming Hyundai’s iMT equipped models are expected to be Rs 20,000 costlier than the regular manual variant. The automaker has already confirmed that the Hyundai Venue iMT will be launched by the end of this month. By the upcoming festive season, the carmaker has plans to launch the all-new i20. The upcoming premium hatchback will be powered by three different engine options- a 1.0L turbo-petrol, 1.2L NA petrol and 1.5L diesel unit. Once launched, it’ll compete with the likes of Maruti Baleno and Tata Altroz.
