Mahindra Thar is one of the most iconic vehicles in India, and is quite popular among car enthusiasts. Customisation is also quite popular, as there are plenty of aftermarket parts for it available in the market. The modified Mahindra Thar that we have here is a little different though. It is not an aftermarket mod job, but has been built by Mahindra’s in-house customisation team.
Dubbed the Mahindra Thar Wanderlust edition, this car was first unveiled to the public at the 2018 Auto Expo. This particular model we see here belongs to the Royal family of Udaipur and features plenty of changes over the regular model, which we shall discuss here. Beginning at the front, we see that the entire face is new. The front grille extends higher than normal and the headlamps and fog lamps are covered with wire mesh. The front bumper has been replaced by a custom one, with integrated bull-bars and an electric winch mounted on it.
Here’s An Extensively Modified Mahindra Thar With Sunroof
The side profile of the car doesn’t have any significant resemblance to the stock car at all. The custom off-road wheels and the giant knobbly tyres look great in the extended wheel arches. The ORVMs are mounted high on the A-pillars, which looks great. What’s even better is that the access to the rear seats is via an upwards opening side door hatch. Although it isn’t a complete door, it's still better than having no door.

At the rear end, the first thing we notice is the large spare tyre and the Jerry can. The taillamps have been integrated into the C-pillar and are placed quite high. The exhaust pipe doesn’t appear from under the vehicle, but from the rear-left wheel arch instead, which is quite an interesting detail. Inside the cabin, you’ll notice that the entire interior of the car has been covered in brown leather, which feels premium.

No changes have been made to the powertrain of the Thar. It is powered by the same 2.5-litre, inline-4, turbocharged, common-rail diesel engine as the stock model. This motor can generate a maximum power of 105 PS and a peak torque of 247 Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission only. Mahindra Customisation charges around Rs. 13.8 lakh for the mod job alone, not inclusive of the cost of the donor car.
