There are plenty of parking rules that people aren’t aware of in India. Below we have compiled a list of all the parking rules you have to follow, as stated in the Motor Vehicles [Amendment] Act.
You cannot abandon or park your vehicle or trailer at any public place in a position that causes obstruction or inconvenience, or poses danger to other people.
If there are any road signs or markings indicating the manner of parking, your vehicle should be parked accordingly.
You are not allowed to park your vehicle:
In a no parking zone, or wherever parking is prohibited
On a footpath or too far away from a footpath
On private property without the consent of the owner
On the main road or any road with high-speed traffic
On the opposite side of the road to any other parked vehicle or alongside one, so as to not obstruct the flow of traffic
On the wrong side of the road
On roads with a white unbroken line in the centre
In front of a gate or blocking the entrance to any premises
Near a bus stop, school, hospital entrance
Near any road sign if your vehicle obstructs the view of the sign
Near a road crossing, a bend, at the top of a hill, or near and on a bridge.
Near a traffic signal or a pedestrian crossing

Any vehicle is liable to be towed, removed, or disabled if:
it’s parked in an area where parking is prohibited
A motor vehicle is left unattended in a public place for 10 hours or more
If an abandoned, unattended, wrecked, totalled, burnt, or partially dismantled vehicle is causing an obstruction or poses any danger to regular traffic
A vehicle can only be authorised to be towed away by a police officer with jurisdiction. The owner of the vehicle will have to bear any charges incurred for the same, apart from the “no parking fine” or any other parking challan issued to you.

If you park your vehicle in any manner stated above, you’ll also have to pay a parking fine or challan. Parking fines vary for every city in India, with the heaviest fines being implemented in crowded metropolitan cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR (mainly New Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida).

No Parking fines in Delhi start from Rs. 500 for illegal and obstructive parking. If your car gets towed, you’ll have to pay towing charges as well, ranging between Rs. 200 – Rs. 2,000, depending on your vehicle. In Bangalore, parking in a no parking zone would attract a fine starting from Rs. 1,000. In Mumbai, BMC has declared fines for parking related offences of Rs. 5,000 – Rs. 8,300 for two-wheelers. The challans go up to Rs. 11,000 – Rs. 17,600 for medium vehicles, Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 15,100 for light motor vehicles, and between Rs. 8,000 – Rs. 12,200 for all three-wheelers.
