Early last month, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, the country's largest carmaker, added another vehicle to its “green” line-up, in the form of the BSVI-compliant Ertiga S-CNG. In a new development, even the Maruti Eeco S-CNG has achived compliance with the stricter emission norms that come into effect from next month. Prices of the new model start at Rs 4.64 lakh (ex-showroom).
Last month, Maruti Ertiga achieved BSVI-compliance for its S-CNG variant, prices for which start at Rs 8.95 lakh.
In line with the company’s ‘Mission Green Million’, the updated Eeco produces lesser emissions than the regular, petrol-powered variant, while also being more affordable to run. Introduced back in January 2010, Maruti Eeco has sold more than 6.7 lakh units till date. This makes it the best-selling MPV in India overall, with a massive 87% market share in the segment. The biggest contributing factors to the Eeco’s popularity are its spacious design, frugal engine, decent performance, practicality, and low price tag.
“Eeco has established a strong foothold with its excellent mileage, best-in-segment comfort, space and power, at a low maintenance cost. Offering best in class safety, its all-purpose built is ideal for versatile use. The multi-purpose van has earned the distinction of being ideal for family travel, while simultaneously being a dependable business vehicle. Taking forward its legacy, Eeco BS6 S-CNG is designed to deliver optimum performance, safety, engine durability, convenience and mileage.”

Maruti Eeco BSVI CNG is powered by a 1.2L G-Series engine, capable of producing a maximum of 72 PS and 101 Nm when running on petrol, and 63 PS and 85 Nm when running on CNG. Maruti has not used the 1.2-litre K-series engine, which also powers the Swift, Swift Dzire, and Baleno, as these cars are front-wheel-drive cars with transversally mounted engines, while the Eeco is rear-wheel drive with a longitudinally mounted engine. Using the K-series motor in the Eeco would require additional RnD expense, which would increase the cost of the vehicle significantly.
