With the discontinuation of the Sumo and Safari, Tata Motors does not have any seven-seater SUVs left in its line-up. In fact, the only 7-seater in the company’s range currently is the Hexa MPV. To rectify this, the homegrown carmaker will soon be introducing the Gravitas, expected to launch during the second half of this year.
Tata Gravitas is essentially a 7-seater Harrier
Followers of IndianAuto would know that this upcoming Tata SUV will be based on the Harrier. From the exterior looks and interior design, to the engine and mechanicals, everything is shared between the two SUVs. The Gravitas is the first seven-seater SUV in the company’s arsenal to be underpinned by the OMEGA (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced) platform, which is based on Land Rover D8 platform, which underpins Jaguar E-Pace, Land Rover Discovery, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and Range Rover Evoque.

The tail-area of the Gravitas lays claim to the major changes
Now, let’s discuss the looks. As can be seen in the pictures, Tata Gravitas features the same front face as the Harrier, with identical vertically-split headlights and front grille. The side profile has some changes though. The Gravitas is longer with a larger rear overhang. The tail-hatch is now raked steeply, without the gentler curves of the Harrier. There is a roof-rail, offered as standard, which is neatly integrated into the D-pillar. At the rear, we see a redesigned taillamp with sharper edges than the Harrier, along with bold ‘GRAVITAS’ badging.

Tata Gravitas features the same dashboard as Harrier
The interior design of the two SUVs remains identical, with the obvious addition of two third-row seats in the Gravitas. Other than that, everything is expected to be the same. That said, the Harrier now features an electronically-operated sunroof on all its trims. Although not confirmed at this point, given the positive response of customers to this upgrade, we expect Tata to offer one on Gravitas as well, at least as an optional accessory.

Same goes for the powertrain. The Gravitas will feature the same Fiat-sourced diesel engine, a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-4, capable of generating 170 PS and 350 Nm. There are two transmission options on offer- a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. There are talks of introducing a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol in the Harrier soon, although the same for the Gravitas cannot be confirmed at the moment.
