Tata Gravitas is the seven-seater version of Tata Harrier. It is confirmed by Tata that the Tata Gravitas will enter the Indian market by the first quarter of 2021.
Earlier this year, Tata Motors brought the new Tata Gravitas (7-seater siblig of Tata Harrier) to the Auto Expo 2020. It was confirmed by the car manufacturer that the 7-seater SUV would be launched later this year. However, due to the current health crisis, Tata had to delay the launch of Tata Gravitas. It was expected that the new Tata SUV would arrive sometime in late 2020. However, according to the latest official statement from Tata, the new Gravitas will enter the market early next year.
Tata Gravitas is the extended version of the 5-seater Tata Harrier. The Harrier's sibling is underpinned by the OMEGA platform which evolved from the famous Land Rover’s D8 platform. According to some reports, the Gravitas will be longer and taller than the Harrier by 63 mm and 80 mm, respectively. Tata Gravitas has been spied on various occasions ahead of launch.
The interior of the Tata Gravitas is likely to resemble the Harrier’s cabin design. The major difference is the additional third row which can be folded to increase the boot space. Some features that are likely to be offered on the Gravitas include an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android and Apple CarPlay, coloured multi-information display, cruise control system, automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button start.
About the powertrain, Tata Gravitas will derive power from a 2.0-litre Kyrotec engine that generates a maximum torque of 170 Bhp and a peak torque of 350 Nm. This engine will come with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Speaking about the upcoming models, Shailesh Chandra, President of Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said,
“Going forward two additional models are going to come- Gravitas and Hornbill (codenames). Gravitas will be a seven-seater SUV while Hornbill will be a sub-compact SUV so we will have four SUVs in our portfolio which would be the widest portfolio. It would help strengthen our market position and sales in the coming years. The company plans to launch the Gravitas during the last quarter of this fiscal. It is yet to fix a date for the Hornbill introduction.”
Recently, Tata Motors has gained significant growth in popularity. Previously, Tata has overthrown Mahindra & Mahindra to become the third-largest car manufacturer in the country. With the launch of the new Gravitas in the SUV segment, it is expected that Tata will grow its presence in the domestic market. Upon launch, Tata Gravitas will take on the likes of MG Hector Plus and the new-gen Mahindra XUV500.
