When Mahindra first launched the Scorpio SUV back in 2002, it was the first product from the Indian UV manufacturer that was not based on the venerable jeep. Over the years it has been a sales success for Mahindra, being one of the most popular SUVs. Some of the readers will remember that the Scorpio also had a more rugged Getaway pick-up version on sale as well.
All-new Mahindra Scorpio To Be Launched In Q2, 2021
But sadly, it was discontinued in 2018 after the Scorpio got its latest refresh. If you reside in Australia though, you can still buy one brand new as it’s still popular there due to the prevailing Ute culture. A Ute is the shortened term for coupe utility, and it is used by Australians to describe vehicles with a tonneau behind the passenger compartment, that can be driven with a regular driver's license. And today we came across this review for the latest generation of the Scorpio Getaway.
The video has been uploaded by John Rooth on YouTube, in which he reviews his Scorpio Getaway which acts as the camera car. John is really impressed with the industrial design of the Getaway, as it is based on an off-road centric ladder frame chassis and leaf spring rear suspension. The engine is based on a tractor design, but that’s not a bad thing as Mahindra is the world’s largest tractor seller. The 2.2-litre chain driven diesel is very tough and reliable while being fuel-efficient as well. So much so, John compares the Getaway to the venerable 79 series Toyota Land Cruiser and finds that the Mahindra is much more frugal and reliable with fewer service intervals. The Scorpio Getaway also gets a mechanically locking differential with a low-range transfer case, which makes the pick-up cross low-grip terrain like sand effortlessly. The interior of the Getaway is sufficiently feature-packed without getting too gimmicky and features a very spacious and airy cabin.
Anand Mahindra Says Mahindra Scorpio Makes its Own Roads
The Mahindra Scorpio Getaway as previously mentioned is powered by a 2.2-litre 4-pot turbo-diesel engine. It churns out max power and torque figures of 120 PS/280 Nm respectively. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed manual. Prices for the Scorpio Getaway start from AUD 26,990 or approximately Rs 13.2 lakh, ex-showroom.
