Indians love SUVs, especially the affordable, sub-compact ones. Currently, there are plenty of contenders in this segment, including Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, and Tata Nexon. There are, however, three more vehicles slated for launch that will compete in this segment.
Here, we shall present a list of all the confirmed upcoming sub-4-metre SUVs in India, along with all the info we have on these.
Toyota and Maruti Suzuki had entered a partnership last year, under which Maruti shall supply cars to Toyota, which would be then rebadged and sold as a new product. Toyota Glanza was the first vehicle to be born out of this agreement. Now, Toyota is also considering to bring a sub-4-metre SUV in a similar manner. Slated to be called the Urban Cruiser, it is not yet confirmed whether the new SUV will be a simple rebadged version like the Glanza/Baleno, or if it will have any aesthetic distinctions.
Toyota Corolla-based SUV Could Be Named “Frontlander”
As for the powertrain, we expect the same 1.5-litre ‘K-series’ engine as the Brezza to be on offer here. This engine is capable of generating 105 PS and 138 Nm of peak power and torque. A 5-speed manual transmission will be offered as standard, and there might also be a 4-speed auto available as an option.
Kia Motors has had a brilliant success in India with the Seltos, and even the Carnival has enjoyed quite a success. To expand its portfolio in India, Kia will soon be launching a new sub-4-metre SUV. Codenamed ‘Sonet’, the upcoming Kia SUV will share its platform with the Hyundai Venue, but borrow styling cues from its elder brother, the Seltos.

The same three engine options will also be borrowed from the Hyundai Venue. The first one will be a 1.2-litre petrol engine, with 83 PS and 114 Nm on tap. The second one will be a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, which can generate 100 PS and 240 Nm. The last one will be a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit, which can belt out 120 PS and 172 Nm.
Nissan has been trying to gain traction in India for quite some time now, but hasn’t managed to break the ceiling. Sister company Renault has managed to reinvigorate public interest with the new Kwid and the Triber, just like it had previously done with the Duster. Sadly, Nissan has had no such luck. Now, Nissan has decided to launch a new vehicle for India, the first one since Kicks. This new product will be an SUV, and that too a sub-4-metre one.

The upcoming sub-compact Nissan SUV, called Magnite, is expected to offer two engine options. The first one will be the 1.0-litre, naturally aspirated, 3-cylinder petrol engine from the Triber, which can produce 72 PS and 96 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. The second one will be the new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, turbo-petrol, expected to produce around 100 PS and 160 Nm. All the theee upcoming models will become direct rivals to the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Venue, the current leaders of the segment.
