Over the last year, Honda Cars India has been gaining much appreciation from car aficionados across the nation thanks to the introduction of popular models like Honda Amaze, CR-V or Civic. In a bid to keep up the good work, the Japanese auto manufacturer is planning to launch the HR-V by late 2019. This is entitled as an all-new mid-size SUV for India.
The Honda HR-V, which has already gone on sale in many international markets for quite some time now, finally makes its way to India. The compact SUV will be slotted above the WR-V in the company’s product line-up and fill the blank between the WR-V and CR-V. At launch, the HR-V will stack up against some similar models like the best-selling Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur, Jeep Compass, Nissan Kicks, not to mention the recently-launched MG Hector and the upcoming Kia Seltos. So how well does the new Honda HR-V compete with these rivals in the hotly-contested mid-size SUV competition? IndianAuto.com will help you find out in this comparison.
Honda HR-V Vs Rivals- Dimensions | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Honda HR-V | Hyundai Creta | Nissan Kicks | Renault Captur | Jeep Compass | |
Length | 4,295 mm | 4,270 mm | 4,384 mm | 4,329 mm | 4,395 mm |
Width | 1,770 mm | 1,780 mm | 1,813 mm | 1,813 mm | 1,818 mm |
Height | 1,605 mm | 1,665 mm | 1,656 mm | 1,619 mm | 1,640 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,610 mm | 2,590 mm | 2,673 mm | 2,673 mm | 2,636 mm |
Ground Clearance | 180 mm | 190 mm | 210 mm | 210 mm | 208 mm |
Just like the Hyundai Creta counterpart, the all-new HR-V is not a sub-four-metre model. The compact size and fluid design of Honda’s SUV are a treat to look at. The HR-V’s curvy and swopping roofline make it look like a crossover rather than a typical upright SUV and the same goes for its dimensions. Generally, the Honda HR-V should be the most “compact” SUV in the lot.
At the length of 4,295 mm and 2,160 mm in the wheelbase, the Honda HR-V is among the shortest models in the competition, along with the Hyundai Creta. Also, it is the narrowest with the 1,770 mm width which is, in fact, shorter than that of Hyundai Creta by 10 mm. The longest car of the group is the Jeep Compass which measures the length of 4,395 mm, followed by the Nissan Kicks and Renault Captur. The Compass is also the largest one with the overall width of 1,818 mm which is 48 mm wider than the new HR-V.
Interestingly, the Renault Captur and Nissan Kicks share the same width, wheelbase and ground clearance of 1,813 mm, 2,673 mm and 210 mm, respectively. As you see, the upcoming Honda HR-V gets the most compact dimensions compared to other competitors in the segment but it would be counterbalanced by the improved agility and manoeuvrability on the city commutes.
In late April, Honda displayed the new HR-V to the dealership principals in Delhi. Although the international-spec HR-V is available with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines, the India-spec model is expected to get a 1.8-litre gasoline engine and a 1.6-litre diesel burner, just like the Honda Civic.

Honda HR-V | Hyundai Creta | Nissan Kicks | Renault Captur | Jeep Compass | |

Engine | 4-cylinder | 4-cylinder | 4-cylinder | 4-cylinder | 4-cylinder, turbo |
Max Power | 141 HP | 123 HP | 106 HP | 106 HP | 163 HP |

Drivetrain | FWD/ AWD | FWD | FWD | FWD | FWD |
That said, the 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol motor will be the largest in the segment with a healthy power and torque output of 141 HP and 172 Nm, which are fair enough to defeat the likes of Jeep Compass’ 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit. Unlike the Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass which can be offered with both manual and automatic transmission, the HR-V will be available with a mere 7-speed automatic torque convertor. Particularly, the Honda HR-V petrol is the only one to get an AWD system (globally) while all other competitors boast an option of FWD system. However, it is yet to confirm whether this variant can make its way to the India-spec version.
Honda HR-V Vs Rivals Comparison- Diesel Engines | |||||

Honda HR-V | Hyundai Creta | Nissan Kicks | Renault Captur | Jeep Compass | |

Transmission | 6-speed MT | 6-speed MT/ 6-speed AT (1.6-litre) | 6-speed MT | 6-speed MT | 6-speed MT |
Drivetrain | FWD | FWD | FWD | FWD | FWD/ AWD |
Considering the diesel configuration, the Jeep Compass undercuts all other rivals head-on by the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that churns out 173 HP of max power and 350 Nm of peak torque. Setting it aside, the 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine on the HR-V produces quite an adequate power of 120 HP and a whopping 300 Nm of torque.
Its 120 HP power is totally more powerful than that of the Renault Captur and Nissan Kicks by 10 HP but still, it is bested by the Hyundai Creta’s 1.6-litre diesel by 8 horsepower. However, the HR-V’s 300 Nm torque output manages to outshine all its enemies, barring the Jeep Compass.

The diesel-powered Honda HR-V employs a standard 6-speed manual transmission along with an FWD drivetrain system. From this, the HR-V falls short of the Hyundai Creta (with an AT option) and the Jeep Compass which is available with an optional AWD system.
