When the first Tata Safari launched way back in 1998, it ushered in a new era for the Indian auto giant, while also being arguably the first proper lifestyle vehicle in India. In production for over two decades, the previous Safari was discontinued in 2020 as BS-VI regulations kicked in. The Safari nameplate has become iconic in India, and it is beloved by hardcore enthusiasts who even have exclusive Safari clubs. Today we have these pictures of an older Tata Safari Dicor parked beside the new one.
Here’s How 2021 Tata Safari Dark Edition Will Look Like
Seeing both the models side by side, the New Tata Safari looks modern with its flared arches and curved design. Compared to it, the old Safari looks a bit dated, but it still carries a load of road presence. In these two models you can see how automobile design has moved on in 12-13 years or so since the Safari Dicor was first launched. Dimension-wise, the new Safari is 4,658 mm long, 1,894 mm wide, 1,786 mm tall, and has a 2,741 mm-long wheelbase. The Safari Dicor, in comparison to this, was 4,655 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,922 mm tall, and had a 2,650 mm-long wheelbase. This means the new model is longer and has a longer wheelbase, while the old one is a bit taller.
But unlike the older Tata Safari which was a full-time 4x4, the new model will be front-wheel-drive only, at least during launch. This has been seen somewhat of a downer for enthusiasts who love the original Safari. Tata Motors has assured however that the Land Rover Discovery-derived D8 platform can be adapted to incorporate a four-wheel-drive system. Tata as also said that based on customer feedback and research, they may explore the idea of a 4x4 Safari in the future.

The new Tata Safari will be powered by the Harrier's Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 170 PS/350 Nm of peak power and torque. The engine will come mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The new Safari upon launch will compete against the likes of the MG Hector Plus, Jeep Compass and the just revealed Citroen C5 Aircross.
