This article is going to provide you with a detailed comparison between the Maruti Wagon R and the Tata Tiago
Each of the two vehicles manages to have its advantage in this comparison. While the Wagon R still maintains its tallboy and sporty design from the outgoing model as one of the identifying features of the hatchback, the Tiago still looks quite fresh and muscular despite being on sale in the market for quite a long time. The two vehicles are different since one is a tallboy hatchback, the other maintains traditional hatchback design traits. Both of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and the Tata Tiago gets some similar safety features like a standard driver airbag and passenger airbag on the higher variants, ABS with EBD, front seatbelt alert, rear parking sensor and central locking. The main thing that sets the two vehicles apart from each other is the fact that the Wagon R base variant offers more safety features as standard, different from the Tiago which offers more on the top-spec one.
The 2019 Wagon R is 3,655 mm long; 1,620 mm wide; 1,676 mm high with a 2,435 mm wheelbase. The Tiago is 3,746 mm long; 1,647 mm wide; and 1,535 mm high with a 2400 mm wheelbase. So, the Tiago is wider and longer, but the Wagon R is higher and has a 35mm longer wheelbase. The Wagon R has a boot capacity of the Wagon R of 341 litres while that of its rival is 242 litres.
Underpinned by the new Heartect chassis, the Wagon R has a lower weight of 805 kg, which is 275 kg lighter than the Tiago. The former has a 32-litre fuel tank capacity while the latter comes with a 35-litre one. The Wagon R rides on 13-14 inch alloy wheels; Tiago features 14-15 inch ones but misses out the alloy units.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is powered by two petrol motors options. While the 1.0L 3-cylinder motor can produce 68 PS against 90 Nm, the 1.2L 4-cylinder unit is good for 82 PS against 113 Nm. Both of the two engines are coupled to a 5-speed AMT/MT gearbox. The mileage figures of the two engines are 22.5 kmpl and 21.6 kmpl, respectively.
The motor options of the Tata Tiago include a petrol engine and a diesel motor. The 1.2L petrol motor is good for 85 PS against 114 Nm. The 1.05L diesel unit is one of the most powerful motors which powers a hatchback in India with power/torque figures being 70 PS against 140 Nm. While the transmission options on the petrol motor include 5-speed MT and AMT unit, the transmission duties on the diesel engine are undertaken by only a 5-speed MT gearbox The two motors have fuel efficiency figures of 23.84 kmpl and 27.28 kmpl, respectively, both of them are higher than those of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R.
The Tata Tiago is the winner in the performance comparison because of its more various motor options
In terms of handling and ride quality, the Tiago outdoes the Wagon R. The latter performs badly around corners with a lot of numb and body roll. To make matters worse, it ranks the lowest in terms of safety around the corner, due to the over-assisted steering. On the other hand, the Tiago, with a quick-responsive chassis and steering makes the handling at the corner a simple task. The Wagon R also operates much worse at high speed on the highway in terms of stability and under emergency braking circumstances.

The price of the Wagon R starts at INR 4.19 lakh for the entry variant and can reach INR 5.69 lakh for the top-spec one.
