The Hyundai Verna 2018 India Review - A Thorough Walkthrough

The Hyundai Verna probably had one of the most actions which packed entries into the longterm fleet, than any other vehicles in the garage.

With the advent of multiple refreshed cars of the same segment like Honda City and Maruti Ciaz, it is quite a matter of fact to expect some ground to be lost; but hey, actually this happens to be a chance to upgrade your car by integrating recently-developed features or updating the current ones. And it is exactly what Hyundai did. The carmaker doesn’t lounge around and waits for an opportunity to present itself, they turn competition into the spawning ground for their brainchild. That being the case, IndianAuto Team now introduce to you the facelifted Hyundai Verna which is now back in the game after a long while of absence.

1. The Hyundai Verna 2018 India Review - What To Expect From The Outside

The car’s appearance has changed quite a little compared to the outgoing model, actually, beholders may confuse it with the topnotch Elantra just based on the profile. The second impression would come from the cascading chrome-inserted front grille having the Hyundai badge at its upper part, being flanked by angular headlights integrated with projector and daytime running lights. Lower down under the headlight clusters is a pair of new fog lights with sharp-cornered housings which is also given chrome treatment.

Noticeably, the side profile does receive its fair share of chrome job which goes to door handles, beltline weatherstrip; and with a set of 16-inch diamond-cut wheels, sharkfin antenna and coupe-like roofline altogether lend quite a sporty look to the whole car. There is certainly a change in dimensions of the Verna and makes the vehicle itself larger basically, leading to curvier outline and a plump body as a whole. Specifically speaking, the Verna is 4405 mm long, stands at 1469 mm height, with its width measures at 1729 mm and the wheelbase at 2600 mm. Meanwhile, the car’s ride height of 165 mm is a tad shorter than the standard one of 170 mm which is considered the minimum for an automobile.

2. The Hyundai Verna 2018 India Review - On The Inside

We drove for a few hours with the car and treat ourselves to the first-hand experience of Verna’s interior. And our conclusion is it’s worth it, it here is your money. The dashboard gets retouched with the new design and new theme of double colours of beige and black, having a chrome insert surrounding the A/C vents and the touchscreen.

Infotainment 7-inch screen is compatible with Apple Carplay, MirrorLink and other convenient apps

Our attention was drawn to the spot-on brand new 7-inch infotainment touch-screen AVN system which incorporates variable apps like Apple Carplay, Android Auto, Voice Command and MirrorLink. Along with the mentioned features above, we also have here Autocruise, system, rearview camera, parking sensors and start/stop button. In addition to that, the higher-end models are exclusively equipped with boot lid auto-opener and impact sensing door unlock system, which is absent on Verna’s rivals. Another big thumbs-up is given to the fresh and advanced climate control system to help you combat with this summer of India. Other handy pieces to make the vehicle more appealing to buyers are power folding mirrors, rear A/C vent, and electronic sunroof. One more component of comfort which the Verna owe to the Elantra is the cooled seats. In layman’s terms, the seats which are ventilated play the role of air circulator, drawing in the air from by the A/C vents and release it back in the cabin to keep it always cool, though it is quite a shame since the system is only equipped with the front seats. And no sweat even if you happen to get sick from the A/C odours which are now taken care of by the Eco Coating, a new technology which helps to remove unpleasant smells in the cabin. Having that being said all about comfort improvements, the new design doesn’t take care of all the job when it comes to headroom. It turns out that this is actually an inevitable sacrifice for the slope of the coupe-like roof and the electronic sunroof to make the car look more flashy. But to their credit, there is enough leg room for everyone, and as long as there is no fifth person involved which means cramming, you are good to go. Cushioning and upholstery are of decent quality. Besides, the boot space is added 20 more litres of capacity and now amounts to 480 litres, meaning more baggage to carry about.

Speaking of the safety package, the entry trim models receive standard dual airbags and anti-lock brake; meanwhile, the top-spec come with six airbags, cornering lights, and ISOFIX, to name but a few.

3. The Hyundai Verna 2018 India Review - Engine and Performance

Moving on to under the hood, the 1.4-litre motors are replaced by the 1.6-litre units which are both petrol and diesel available, tuned to either the 6-speed manual transmission or the automatic gearbox.

HyundaiVerna’s under-the-hood

The 1,582cc four-cylinder diesel engine yields 128hp of power and 260Nm of torque. The impressive detail lies with its refinement, which means the NVH level of the motor has been hugely improved, you can hardly hear any noise in the cabin or feel any vibration from the floor while driving at normal speed. Another option is the 1,591cc 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol motor which offers 123hp of power and 151Nm of peak torque, though it can’t compare to the diesel unit when it comes to punching. And thanks to the revised platform borrowed from the snazzy Elantra, the vehicle is greatly spared the pain of dealing with rough terrains; in fact, receiving the boost from the new shock absorber, the sedan works wonderfully on some bumpy and potholed roads we drove through to test the car.

With all the updates to the equipment list, the next-gen Verna sees a slight increase in starting price (from Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 12.39 lakh), but still it is a fair deal if not to say that the price comes as quite a reasonable offer and very competitive in comparison with that of the Toyota Yaris, the Honda City, the Maruti Ciaz and the Volkswagen Vento.
