Mahindra Xylo Review: Overview

Mahindra, the home-grown carmaker well-known for manufacturing big utility vehicles, has introduced the Mahindra Xylo to the Indian auto market. With the fashionable Scorpio, the robust Bolero and the uber spacious Xylo, the home-grown automaker has maintained its reputation for offering affordable and big-sized utilitarian vehicles to the customers. Being a real value for money, it provides excellent comfort and space which is almost unequalled by other vehicles in the same segment. Since its launch in the Indian auto market, the vehicle has received numerous updates and has gradually managed to satisfy many customers’ needs.

The Mahindra Xylo is available in five variants. Refer to the table below for a detailed list of the Mahindra Xylo variants.

Mahindra Xylo 360 View: How does it look?

Take the highly popular Mahindra Bolero, whose design is representative of the majority of Mahindra’s big-sized vehicles, as an example. It is flat and boxy, but still proportionate. Nevertheless, the design of the Mahindra Xylo is a little bit out of proportion. The long wheelbase and high ground clearance may not live up to some people’s expectations. The curvy headlights and the bean-shaped bonnet aren't very pretty when looking at the car straight-on. However, the Mahindra Xylo looks butch, thanks to its muscular appearance.

Front View

Specifically, in the front, some of the most noteworthy features of the MPV include large headlights and aggressive black radiator grille across all the variants and integrated fog lights with air-dam insert lend.

Side View

On the side profile, the proportionately sized rearview mirrors, the wheel arch cladding, flared wheel arches and body graphics contribute to its sporty stance. The car does look under-tyred though. Bigger wheels would have been appreciated.

Rear View

In the rear, the fashionable wrap-around taillights and chrome strip above the number plate add to the vehicle’s premium look.

Mahindra Xylo Interior: Space, Comfort, and Convenience

Once you step into the Mahindra Xylo, you will realize how much attention Mahindra has paid to the space, comfort, and convenience for the passengers.

Seating Capacity

The Mahindra Xylo can accommodate up to eight people. The MPV provides the occupants with a super comfortable cabin which exceeds almost all other vehicles in its segment in terms of roominess. Entering into and exiting out of the car will take a little effort. Fortunately enough, the large doors, spacious entry area and adjustable seats help simplify the task. The height of both the driver’s seat and the steering wheel can be adjusted, which is good news for short drivers.

The front seat is foldable and can be connected to the seat behind to create a bed, which is a wonderful feature, especially during long journeys. The middle seat row on the Xylo further enhances the comfort of the vehicle. Instead of being a conventional bench, it consists of two bucket seats which can offer additional comfort for tall passengers. Specifically designed for kids, the rear seat row does not provide equal space and comfort for the passengers. Luckily, it is quite simple to move to the last seat row, which takes a little physical effort to fold the second seat row.

Safety & Security Features

Well-equipped with a long list of safety and security features, the Mahindra Xylo provides its passengers with a high level of protection and security. Besides some standard safety equipment like ABS, seat belts and tilt steering column, the Xylo is also packed with special crumple zones. The car’s motor immobilizer is designed for theft prevention. Specifically, if an inappropriate key is injected into the car, the immobilizer will automatically cut off the fuel supply to the motor to prevent the car from being started by the “wrong” owner.

Comfort features

Some unique comfort features of the Mahindra Xylo include foldable flight trays which are positioned behind the front seats, individual reading lamps for the passengers and mobile charging points. Fitted with puddle lights, the doors provide the passengers with more visibility, especially at night. A wide front armrest provides the driver and the co-passenger with a comfortable journey. In the meanwhile, an integrated footrest helps the passengers enter and exit the car more easily. With independent air conditioning vents, the Surround Cool Dual AC cools all the positions in this car and this can be individually controlled by each passenger. Various storage spaces are found inside the cabin of the Xylo, which further contributes to its practicality.

The most noteworthy feature in the Mahindra Xylo is the tech-savvy Digital Drive Assist System (DDAS), which displays some basic information such as time, date, temperature and humidity, etc. The DDAS also has an inbuilt system which will warn you to wear a seatbelt if you forget to do so. Moreover, the Intellipark Reverse Assist comes with a visual prompt in the rearview mirror which displays the distance between the rear bumper and an object behind the car. The 2 Din Entertainment System supports CDs, MP3s, SD cards and USB devices, which gives the passengers a pleasant travelling experience.

The transmission duties on both of the two versions are undertaken by a 5-speed MT. Both of these engines are BSIV-compliant, which means that the domestic automaker will need to upgrade the engines soon if they want to continue producing this MPV.

Riding and handling quality

The Mahindra Xylo has an excellent riding and handling quality. The steering is responsive and it suffers from much lesser body rolls at low speed in comparison with its competitor. The front Independent Coil spring system and the rear multi-link setup have a good performance without any road shocks and vibrations. Nevertheless, the rear passengers feel quite bumpy, which is also the case with similarly-sized vehicles.

Verdict: Is Mahindra Xylo worth buying?

The Mahindra Xylo is one ideal option for driving in the city as well as off-road. Thanks to the masculine exterior design, the vehicle has a commanding road presence. Besides the sporty exterior, it also has a spacious and comfortable interior, which makes it a reliable car for large families’ long journeys. Nevertheless, it is not without drawbacks. Outdated interior, average fit and finish quality and the engine's failure to comply with the upcoming BS-VI emission norms are a few to name. Therefore, consider everything carefully before making any decision to buy one Mahindra Xylo.
