Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. has finally unveiled the much awaited 2020 Thar, which makes its debut on India’s 74th Independence Day. The latest generation of the Mahindra Thar comes across as a comprehensive update over the earlier generation as it promises to offer more in terms of performance, comfort & convenience, technology and safety. The 2020 Mahindra Thar will launch on October 2, 2020, on the company's Founder's Day and 75th anniversary.
With the 2020 Mahindra Thar, the homegrown carmaker not only aims to attract off-roading aficionados but even those in search of a comfortable-yet-capable lifestyle offering with all the bells and whistles of a contemporary SUV. The new model is based on the company’s modern 3rd generation platform and will be sold in two engine variants – 2.0-litre mStallion TGDI petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel. The former outputs 112 kW and 320 Nm, while the latter offers 97 kW and 300 Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic unit. The SUV features a manual shift-on-the-fly 4x4 transfer case.
Furthermore, shifting from 4-High to 4-low mode multiplies the torque by 2.48 times. The new Thar also comes with a standard front axle disconnect feature and a mechanical-locking Rear Differential (MLD. The 2020 Mahindra Thar comes with 245/75 R16 tyres as standard and 255/65 R18 tyres as optional. With the latter, the SUV offers a first-in-class 226 mm ground clearance.
The new Thar also boasts a 41.8˚ approach angle, 36.8˚ departure angle And 27˚ break over angles With R18 wheels and tires. Also, the SUV has 650 mm water-wading capacity. All crucial components like electronic control units have been placed at a level above the wading plane to avoid any sort of malfunctioning of the equipment.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will be sold with two roof options - a first-in-class Convertible Top and an optional Soft Top. Also, there are two seating options to choose from – 4 front facing and 2+4 side-facing. The features list includes a drizzle resistant 17.8 cm touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, adventure statistics display, roof-mounted speakers and a lot more. The safety suite on offer includes ABS + EBD, Dual airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, Hill-hold and hill descent control and more. The colour options for the new model include - Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Galaxy Grey, Napoli Black, Rocky Beigh and Aquamarine.
