2020 Mahindra Thar has been spied once again in a new HD Video. The next-gen model is supposed to launch later during the year.

One of the most anticipated upcoming SUVs today is the 2020 Mahindra Thar. While the company decided not to debut the new model at the Auto Expo 2020, there are countless spy pictures and videos being taken of test vehicles floating around the internet.

The video above is by a YouTube channel called “Power Stroke PS”. In the video, we have quite a clear view of the upcoming Thar from nearly all the angles. The video begins with the face of the camouflaged test vehicle, capturing the side profile next, and then films the car from the rear. There is another clip after that, wherein the car is parked near a restaurant and all the design details not hidden by the camo-wrap are visible in all their glory.

As can be seen in the video, the new 2020 Mahindra Thar looks very butch and imposing, much more than the current model. Apart from that, you get a huge front grille with seven vertical slats, new headlamps, a new front and rear bumper, and flared wheel arches with turn-indicators. The overall silhouette is extremely boxy, and the vehicle looks more masculine than the previous-generation. In fact, it looks more like a Jeep Wrangler, owing to its larger dimensions.

While there is no confirmation on the powertrain of the vehicle, there are a number of options available from which the manufacturer can choose. There is an entire range of new petrol engines dubbed “mStallion”. Out of the three choices available there, we expect the new Thar to have either the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol (165 PS and 280 Nm) or the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol (192 PS and 380 Nm) under its hood. Apart from one of these, the Thar will also offer a diesel engine. It could be the old 2.2-litre unit upgraded to meet the BS6-emission norms, or it could be an entirely new 2.0-litre motor rumoured to produce 140PS of max power. Whatever be the case, it can be said for certain that the addition of a petrol engine option will help the Thar keep a lower entry price, making it more accessible to enthusiasts.

The new-gen Thar is also expected to be built on an entirely new ladder-frame chassis, in order to improve safety while also boosting its off-road prowess. The former has been one of the most focussed agendas in Mahindra’s to-do list right now, with cars like Alturas G4 and XUV300 acing Global NCAP safety tests and scoring 5-star ratings for adult occupant safety. Upon launch, the vehicle will compete with Force Gurkha and the upcoming Maruti Gypsy/Suzuki Jimny.
