As a part of the brand’s plan to penetrate into the high-end luxury market, BMW 9-series coupe could soon be the reality.

Planning on penetrating into the high-end luxury market, the German carmaker could produce a BMW 9-series coupe which is four-door coupé. Adrian van Hooydonk, the manager of BMW design division, has hinted to produce a car to take the likes of Mercedes-Maybach S 600.

Previously, the German automaker has launched a new 8-series which offer a new design language to appeal to a high-end audience. It is expected to undercut rivals Mercedes S-class and the Porsche 911. The recently launched 8-series coupé is the first model to carry that name since the original went out of production in 1999, and is set to be followed by a four-door coupé version late next year.

To penetrate more into the auto market, the German automaker plans on introducing a number of new models, which likely includes a 9-series.

In response to the emerged source, which is whether BMW had plans for a 9-series or not, Van Hooydonk reported to the media,

“Let’s say this: we won’t stop here [with the 8 Series]. Obviously, our job is to have more ideas than the company can build, because the other way round would be very bad.”

Sharing platform elements with the 7-series sedan, the 8 series is expected to underpin a future 9-series, which would also have the same engines. The 8-series range includes a 530.2hp, 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine in the M850i, and a 3.0-litre, inline, six-cylinder diesel producing 320.4hp in the 840d.

BMW has proven itself a solid choice in a tough segment with high-end buyers as China by this large four-door coupé. In the meantime, the 9-series is also likely to tie in with the potential expansion of BMW’s SUV and electric I range.

Speaking to the growth of the I brand which gives BMW the freedom to push into the premium market, Van Hooydonk also added,

“The I brand has created a lot of opportunities for us, both in the acceptance of new technologies and also in the acceptance of new design. [In terms of design], a car like the i8 opened doors to us we didn’t even know were there.”
