2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is considered as a 'benchmark' car which is received a mid-cycle facelift to keep its veils sitting high against the wind.

1. Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2018 Facelift In India Review - Prologue

Seriously! what defines class? Well! looks like luxury happens to be one of them the elements but definitely not among the most decisive ones. Turns out one of the factors for sure that hugely determines a brand’s success is just all about how long the brand has been around till the very now. Yep! You heard it right, persistence is the key to a Hollywood ending. But even class has its time and when it finishes running its course, it gets replaced. Why yes! Every car brand is aware of this universal fact and they try every means within their power to extend their fate line.

Things run their courses and then you get bored, you want something new. But today is far from the ending line for the S-Class

Mercedes-Benz S-Class (What a long-winded name! I know) has made its name with its first debut back in 1972, and together with the likes of BMW 7, Lexus LS 500h and Jaguar XL J dominated the luxury sedan segment since like forever. Long has it reigned, still, the car maker does recognize the nudge of reviving their brainchild lest it succumbs to its rivals’ competition. And here once again re-emerging the epitome of comfort and splendour as if to say that its course is bound to be over but definitely not today. Ladies and gentlemen! We present you the facelifted model of the 2018 S-Class!

2. Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2018 Facelift In India Review - The Outside

Undersized wheels are the only downside here that may get some heads shaking

We will not waste much time on this part since retouches to the exterior can be said as negligible. Still, the new model by no means gets itself mistaken for the outgoing one thanks to the upgraded pair of headlamps which are incorporated with 3 strips of LED DRL each. Moving on to the back, the old taillamps also get replaced by two jewel-effected LED ones. Another update to be mentioned is the new set of alloy wheels of fresh design, though it may get frowned upon by some folks who find the wheels out of proportion with the whole vehicle for the puny size. Other details like the grille, body creases and outline overall retain the familiar design of the previous S-Class.

3. Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2018 Facelift In India Review – The Inside

The real fun that determines the opulence lies on the inside of the car. Of all the modifications being made, the single unit of dual 12.3 inch widescreens, which combines a reconfigurable instrument panel and infotainment with navigation, stands out from the rest. The system also features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth along with other in-car entertainment features. And for the driver to never take their eyes off the road, Mercedes-Benz has integrated the steering wheel with touch control buttons to nearly every feature of the vehicle; speaking of convenient you say.

The two 12.3 inch widescreens are set side-by-side seamlessly and function as an instrument cluster and infotainment system

We are sure to tell you that there will be no complaints concerning space regardless of an occupant’s build because the moment you start to name something this vehicle has in abundance, you realize space is the most obvious one. With classic beige upholstery, the seats are all about ergonomics and amazingly comfortable, which means you can lay back, lounge around, recline with full support for head, shoulders, thighs and back; just lovely to state.

The bountiful room is unquestionably a good thing especially when it comes to the privacy issue

As for the safety package, the car maker leaves no room for blunders with passive safety features such as airbags, ABS, ESP appearing on the base model onwards. What’s new here is the deployment steering assist system – notifying the driver when driving the car out of its lane by sending vibration via the steering wheel; blind spot detection to forewarn you of other cars’ presence in the blind spot whenever you want to make a turn. But to go a further mile in securing its clients’ welfare, Mercedes-Benz went through all the troubles to also enlist adaptive cruise assist, automatic brake assist. You know? Better safe than sorry, they always say.

4. Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2018 Facelift In India Review – Engine & Performance

The S 350d variant receives a more refined 2,987cc diesel unit while the S 450 gets a tweaked 2,996cc petrol.

 Mercedes-benz S-class 2018’s engine, under-the-bonnet view, bonnet being open

Amazing is the story that the diesel motor impressively fits all the requirements of BS-VI emission standards

We only got our hands on the S 350d only for the driving test and its performance is flawless. The diesel engine, which comes in pair with a brand new nine-speed automatic gearbox, churns out an awe-inspiring power of 286hp, surpassing that of the previous car. Acceleration is achieved smoothly with a steady manner, reaching 100kph in a brief span of only 6.8 seconds.

People are recommended to put the car in Comfort mode for a relaxing drive, but when on highway and driving at high speed, the S-Class starts to feel flimsy and light. This is solved easily by switching the vehicle to Sports mode to strengthen suspension for better response. However, making the turn, for its own part, will turn out to be a bit tricky as body lean still happens no matter what mode the car is in.

New Mercedes S-Class 2018 in-depth review

8. Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2018 Facelift In India Review - Epilogue

In the automotive industry, it’s not that much of a big deal when a facelift emerges to be a total blockbuster which successfully improves on its predecessor, and this happens to also be the case of this very S-Class we are talking above. So far it has ticked all the boxes relating to convenient equipment, comfort and performance (we are just assuming that you have the financial concern to afford this babe) after all the test drives we put it through.

Again things run their courses then end up cloying, but such fate is yet to happen with the S-Class.

To put it briefly, it is supremely functional, suave, classic and standard-setting. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class doesn’t follow any trail, it forges its own way and leaves an example behind in its wake for the other car makers to emulate. Again things run their courses then end up cloying; but such fate is yet to happen with the S-Class, honey. For the time being, it is still running its own course – a very long one.
