2020 Land Rover Defender will return to the Indian market after a four-year-long hiatus. The prototype of the Defender was recently spotted testing in India

Land Rover Defender was discontinued in India in 2016. However, after four years, it will come back in 2020. Earlier, Land Rover teased the images of the Defender prototypes being tested on the Indian streets. Recently, the same model was spotted again undergoing tests in Bangalore. The Defender seen in the spy shots is the three-door model with a short wheelbase. The registration plate on the prototype actually belongs to Tata Consultancy Services.

The registration plate carried by the 2020 Land Rover Defender test mule belongs to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Before entering the market, the Land Rover Defender is being tested rigorously on the Indian roads. Reportedly, the prototype that has been spied testing has been driven in various harsh terrains from extremely cold to really hot weather conditions. The engineering team even sent the car to a 13,000 ft altitude for testing purposes. In fact, one prototype was donated to the British NGO Tusk Trust. This donated vehicle was sent to Kenya to do the service of towing supplies and loads at a forest reserve. It would help the development team to understand how the vehicle drives in real-life condition.

As promised by Land Rover, the next generation of Defender will come with extraordinary off-road ability, which will make it a better off-roader than any other model on its portfolio. Given that Land Rover has always been known for offering incredible off-road capacity across its range, the new Defender is truly worth looking forward to. It is expected to arrive with a load of off-road assist features alongside the ASAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The 2020 Land Rover Defender will be available in two wheelbase configurations, a longer wheelbase with five doors and a shorter wheelbase with only three doors.

The former wears the '110' badge while the shorter model wears a '90' badge. Compared with the last generation model, the new Defender’s weight has significantly dropped. It is reported that Land Rover is also working on a longer ‘130’ version. It seems that the new Defender will come with a variety of trims and variants for the customers to choose from. The Land Rover Defender 2020 is expected to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show at the end of the current year. There is a good chance that the new Defender will be powered by an updated 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine.
