Recently, a test-mule of new-gen Mahindra Thar was caught up close on camera. It was the diesel automatic variant of the car, and the video clip revealed of some interesting interior details.

Mahindra Thar is a bare-basic off-roader we all know of. It was discontinued last year as it failed to comply with new pedestrian safety norms and automotive industry standards for safety. Therefore, the manufacturer is working over a new-gen model of the Thar. It has been spotted numerous times till date donning heavy camo, thus there’s very little that is known about it. However, dealers have started accepting the bookings for the new-gen Thar, unofficially. Although, here’s our latest dig on the upcoming new-gen Thar that reveals a lot about the car’s mechanicals and the feature list.

In the video above, the new-gen Thar was caught during its final rounds of testing. It is in its concluding phase of development and is expected to launch by October this year. In the video, the test driver of the prototype can be seen confirming that it is the diesel automatic variant of the car. While he pans the camera inside the car, the video reveals more detail of the new-gen Thar. To start with, the car gets a completely redesigned interior. There's a new dashboard in place with an upmarket feel to it. It also gets a revised instrument console with a coloured-TFT display for the MID.

The multi-function steering wheel on the new-gen Thar is a redesigned unit as well. This time around, it also gets buttons for music and cruise control. In the centermost part of the dashboard, touchscreen infotainment can also be seen. Also, the climate control dials feature a chunky design. While, the car does not get a sunroof, which is a hyped-up feature these days, the FRP top on the front row of seats appears to be a removable affair. Also, the car gets roof-mounted cabin lamps and speakers like the Jeep Wrangler.

Talking of the mechanicals, the new-gen Thar will be getting a petrol and diesel power plant as options. The diesel motor on the new-gen Thar will be a newly developed 2.0L mHawk engine that would put out 140 PS of peak power. It will get the Aisin-sourced 6-speed AT and a 6-speed MT as transmission options. The petrol motor, on the other hand, will be a 1.5L mStallion motor with 163 PS of peak power.
