Ashok Leyland Establishes New EV facility in Ennore

An electric vehicle facility has been set up in Ennore by Ashok Leyland, the second largest EV maker of India, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the company.

It is the first time that Ashok Leyland has inaugurated an EV centre like this, where both the design and testing activities for the EVs are conducted. The internal facilities can also carry out the testing for motors, battery modules and packs, power electronics laboratory.

Given the fast-growing technology and market, this new facility is considered the key to the company’ rapid and flexible development.

Commenting on the establishment of the new EV centre, Vinod K Dasari, managing director, Ashok Leyland, said,

“In our 70th year, we are laying the foundation for our future. The EV Centre in Ennore will give us the edge throughout the evolution of eMobility. Currently, we are the only OEM globally to offer different energy management strategies and an architecture which is modular. Our plan is to start working on new product platforms in EVs such as eLCV, low-floor city buses, last mile connectivity and power solutions products.”

He also revealed that a wide range of business models, eMaaS (eMobility as a Service) and eMSol (eMobility as a Solution), have also been launched by the company to bring end-customers closer and increase the value. The government’s e-mobility vision will help the country save Forex and be less dependent on oil. Furthermore, it will also help the car industry in general and the company in particular reduce the ownership cost and apply the most advanced technology.

The plant with eMaaS and eMSol will help Ashok Leyland to lay the foundation for the future

Karthick Athmanathan, BU Head, EV's and eMobility, with Ashok Leyland, said:

"At present, we have a capacity to take care of about 5,000-10,000 vehicles per annum, with different battery and charging options. We have leveraged start-ups in India as well as from abroad, to bring in innovative yet cost-effective solutions that are offered by us on a turnkey basis."

Equipped with digital tools, Ashok Leyland’s new EV facility is also in charge of production and field tracking activities. All the solutions contracts and services which are related to eMobility for Ashok Leyland will be conducted by this plant in cooperation with the eMobTech centre located in IIT Madras Research Park in Adyar.
