Instead of the existing percentage of steeling using in car body which is 30% in the domestic market, now the automakers may be forced to use 70% for the same model if it is for export.

According to a senior official, the road transport and highways ministry is proposing to make it mandatory for automobile manufacturers to use 70% galvanised steel for car body panels. It is explained that the materials as galvanization, or coating with zinc, make steel less prone to corrosion, which in turn makes structures safer.

Regard of the domestic market, automakers have to use only 30% galvanised steel for vehicles. However, now, as in the ministry note, this percentage may rise to 70% for the same model if it is for export while the global average is 50%.

This proposal is pertaining to cars under Rs. 10 lakh which was built in India. It is based on a study conducted by IIT Mumbai in 2015 about how corrosion affects durability and safety of cars in India.

Reports suggest that the ministry has directed the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) to study the proposal and prepare a report.

Another top official at the ministry said,

“We keep getting a number of proposals and we do seek expert opinion of testing agencies.”

According to a technical expert at the ministry, the move is part of the ministry’s thrust to establish standards that will enhance road safety.
