Honda Amaze More Popular than City, WR-V, Jazz, etc Put Together

Owing to the slowdown in the automobile industry, car manufacturers are currently dealing with one of the worst sales slumps to ever hit the Indian car market. With the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the situation has further worsened. Honda Cars India Ltd has reported a massive 78.5 per cent decline in sales in March 2020 on a YoY basis (3,697 units sold as compared to 17,202 units in March 2019). Among all the cars in Honda’s line-up for India, the Amaze managed to capture the most audience.

In FY2019-20, Honda had managed to dispatch a total of 102,016 units, which is a 44.5 per cent drop in compared to 1,83,808 units in FY2018-19. The Japanese carmaker’s biggest success during this period was its smallest sedan offering, the Amaze, which sold a total of 57,471 units. This figure is more than half of the company’s entire sales volume for FY2020. The year before was a similar story, with 85,061 units of the Amaze dispatched in FY2019. As can be seen in the table above, Honda Amaze has been Honda’s bestseller in India last financial year, as well as the year before. In fact, the total sales generated from the Amaze are more than the combined sales volume of all the other cars in Honda’s India line-up.

In other news, the next-generation Honda City is due for a launch in India, delayed by the COVID-19 outbreak. The new generation model will also feature a diesel engine option, which has been discontinued in the current model. The Japanese carmaker is also yet to introduce the BS6 version of the Jazz in the market, which has been temporarily discontinued. Sadly, this will be a minor facelift, not the new-generation model. The next-gen Honda Jazz is already retailing in its domestic market as the Honda Fit. While there are no plans to bring the new model to India at the moment, if the Jazz manages to gain a decent sales momentum, Honda could bring the next-gen model to our country as well.
