Hyundai Venue Follows Kona to Bag Top Honours at IIHS Safety Awards

Hyundai Venue titled as Top Safety Pick 2020 by IIHS. The compact-SUV received 'Good' ratings for the crash tests, while its crash avoidance systems are rated as 'Superior'.

Hyundai Venue has bagged the title of Top Safety Pick by IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The independent, not-for-profit organization is known for evaluating cars that are sold in the USA market, on their safety aspects. Last year, Hyundai Kona too received a similar test score at the IIHS facility. Following the suite, this year is the Hyundai Venue. IIHS evaluates the car based on its scores in various crash tests, crash avoidance & mitigation trials, child seat anchor’s ease of use, and the optional safety features.

On the crash test bench, Venue is rated as Good (Highest rating at IIHS) for all 6 crash tests, namely small overlap front: driver side and passenger side, moderate overlap front, side-impact test, roof strength test, and head restraint & seat test. For the crash avoidance & mitigation aspect, headlamps and front crash prevention system V2V and V2X are tested. Here, the headlamps of the higher variants of the Venue are rated as Acceptable, while those of the lower trims are rated as Marginal.

For the crash preventions system: vehicle to vehicle, the standard fitment and the optional extra systems are rated as ‘Superior’ by IIHS. For crash prevention system: vehicle to pedestrian, the standard fitment sits lower down the scoreboard with an ‘Advanced rating only, while the optional unit sits above it with a ‘Superior’ rating.

Talking of the child seat anchors, the latch’s ease of use is rated as acceptable, which isn’t a great rating to have for a basic safety system. The optional safety systems that Hyundai Venue gets in the USA are – Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Departure Prevention. With these ratings and safety features, the Venue has topped the charts and got itself the award for IIHS’ Top Safety Pick 2020.

On the A-NCAP’s testbed, Venue scored a 4-star crash test rating, which is exceptional for a sub-4m compact-SUV. In India, Venue is sold at a starting price of Rs. 6.55 lakh. It is offered with 3 engine options – 1.2L petrol, 1.0L turbo-petrol, and 1.5L diesel. Also, there are 4 different transmission options to choose from – 5-speed MT, 6-speed MT, 6-speed iMT, and 7-speed DCT.
