Skoda Rapid is the brand's volume generator in the Indian market. And now, Skoda India's sales and marketing director has confirmed that the next-gen model will be pricier and larger than the current one.

The next-generation Skoda Rapid is going to be one of the most important launches for the VW group this year. Most probably launching around Diwali 2021, the new Rapid has a lot of anticipation and excitement around it. Skoda India’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Zac Hollis responded to a query on Twitter by confirming the next-gen Rapid to be more expensive than the outgoing model. This could mean that the new Rapid will be sold alongside the older model, similar to Honda selling their fourth and fifth-gen City alongside each other.

Upcoming Skoda Rapid Replacement To Be Pricier And Bigger Than Outgoing Model

Although Skoda has already debuted the next-generation Skoda Rapid in markets abroad, but the model coming to India will be quite different. The next-gen Skoda Rapid for India will be a completely new and bigger sedan and will be based on VW’s new MQB-A0-IN platform. Skoda had trademarked the name ‘Slavia’ in India and the upcoming sedan could use this nameplate instead, and the automaker will announce the name officially soon. Like other upcoming Skoda and Volkswagen vehicles, the new sedan will be a part of VW Group’s India 2.0 Project.

All upcoming VW group vehicles will be petrol-only models in India and will be powered by the automaker’s TSI turbo-petrol engines. Skoda has stated that the 1-litre TSI engine will be the backbone for the India 2.0 Project, and this powertrain will power the upcoming sedan as well. The MQB-A0-IN platform can also fit in the larger 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that currently does duty on the Skoda Karoq.

This means that there is a possibility that Skoda could offer the bigger engine in the higher-spec variants of the upcoming Skoda Rapid replacement. Transmission options will likely include a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The new sedan will be a notchback like the Octavia, meaning it will get a liftback boot lid. Before the new Rapid launches, Skoda is concentrating their efforts on the next-gen Octavia and the Kushaq SUV, with the latter to be globally unveiled on March 18th, 2021.

The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Prices for the Skoda rapid range from Rs 7.99 lakh – Rs 13.29 lakh, ex-showroom. Expect the upcoming replacement to priced from Rs 10 lakh onwards.
