Tata Motors is planning to add a new engine as well a gearbox option to the Altroz line-up.

Tata Motors has recently added its first premium hatchback to its line-up, the Altroz. The Baleno- and i20- rival has managed to outperform its smaller sibling, the Tiago, in terms of sales volume. To add more to the customers, Tata will soon be offering two new options on the Altroz - a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and an automatic transmission.

Tata Altroz (Turbo-petrol) spied during testing

The turbo-petrol Atroz was recently spied earlier during road-test. The test mule wore full-body camouflage, which could potentially mean that there will be some aesthetic changes to the car as well. There could be a slightly sportier-looking body kit on offer, complete with new, larger alloy wheels.

Currently, Tata Altroz is offered with two engine options. First is a 1.2-litre inline-3 naturally aspirated (Revotron) petrol mill. It is capable of producing 86 PS and 113 Nm of peak power and torque figures, respectively. Second is a 1.5-litre inline-4 turbocharged (Revotorq) diesel motor. It can generate up to 90 PS and 200 Nm of the same. Both these engines come coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission only. The additional engine option, the additional turbo-petrol engine and an optional automatic gearbox will add diversity to the Atroz’s range, making it more competitive.

The aforementioned 1.2-litre petrol engine is expected to be borrowed from the facelifted Nexon SUV. That car pushes out a max power figure of 120 PS, and a peak torque figure of 170 Nm. That said, there is a possibility that Tata would be introducing a detuned version of this motor in the Altroz, favouring affordability instead of raw power. Expect realistic max power and torque figures of around 100 PS and 140 Nm. A similar prototype was shown at the 2019 Geneva Motorshow as well.
