The Tata Altroz has been one of the most long-anticipated vehicles in India. First making its official debut at the 2018 Auto Expo under the concept model: the Tata 45X, the hatchback was eventually named as the Altroz after a seabird named Albatross which symbolizes speed and agility. The official name announcement of the car took place on February 25, 2019. The Tata Altroz will be based on the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) platform. With a modular, flexible and lightweight characteristics, the new platform enables the Altroz to have numerous body styles and powertrain options consisting of petrol, diesel and electric. This platform which is able to evolve into a wide range of modern vehicles in a short development cycle is expected to underpin other Tata vehicles including the upcoming SUVs, MPVs, sedans, hatchback as well as EVs in the future.

Moreover, the upcoming Altroz will be the second vehicle to be manufactured by the brand to come with the Impact 2.0 Design Language after the Tata Harrier. Moreover, the car will feature wide wheel arches and a bold character line which runs across its body which contribute to the sporty design of the vehicle.

The Tata Altroz will be 3,988 mm long, 1,754 mm wide and 1,505 mm high with a 2,501 mm wheelbase and a 341-littre cargo space. The upcoming Tata Altroz is expected to keep under its hood two gasoline and one oil burner. All of these will comply with the stricter BSVI-emission standards. Two petrol motors consist of a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated unit which is borrowed from the Tata Tiago and a 1.2-litre turbo one. While the former can produce a maximum power of 85 PS against a peak torque of 114 Nm and will be available in the low-spec variants, the latter can generate a more impressive power/torque output of 102 PS/140 Nm and will implement the power provision duties on the higher trims.

As mentioned above, the all-new Altroz is also likely to receive its power from a 1.5-litre diesel unit carried over from the Tata Nexon. This motor will be detuned to churn out a lower power of 91.25 PS and also a lower torque. The transmission duties on the premium hatchback will be undertaken by only a 5-speed manual transmission at launch with the automatic version being introduced later.

The Tata Altroz will have a claimed average mileage of 15 to18 kmpl in the city and 22 to 25 kmpl on the highway. The real mileage figure can slightly vary, depending on various factors such as the vehicle’s kerb weight and the road conditions, etc.

Since the ALFA platform also allows Tata to develop an all-electric version of the Tata Altroz, which was also debuted at the Geneva Motor Show and is expected to be launched in 2020. As revealed earlier, the electric Altroz will have a travel range of 250 km - 300 km per charge and takes about 60 minutes to be charged to 80%.

The upcoming premium hatchback will also feature a modern cabin with a wide range of top-notch features. Having said that, the most unique selling point of the Tata Altroz could be its multiple engine and transmission options. With a quite aggressive price, the Altroz is anticipated to become a formidable competitor in the Indian hatchback segment.
