Maruti Suzuki is considering developing a new SUV to rival Hyundai Creta in the compact SUV segment.

Even on being the most favoured and popular car brand in the Indian market, Maruti Suzuki doesn’t have a model in the small SUV segment. At the moment, it is the Hyundai Creta that occupies the segment-leading position, and Maruti is pretty much behind with its response, the S-Cross. Maruti has tried to improve S-Cross’s sales by giving it some updates but still, it lags behind by a huge margin. While the S-Cross could only sell 2,325 unit in November 2019, the Hyundai Creta easily surpass with 9,677 unit sold in the same month. It seems clear that Maruti Suzuki is unlikely to beat Hyundai in the compact SUV segment unless it comes with a new SUV.

Maruti Suzuki is considering launching an all-new Hyundai Creta-rival SUV

Knowing how fruitful the SUV segment in India in, Maruti has revealed their future plan of launching an all-new SUV to rival the Hyundai Creta. Kenichi Ayukawa, Maruti Suzuki’s MD and CEO, has responded that they are ‘studying that type of vehicle, a big-size SUV’ when being asked if the global Vitara would be their response to the Hyundai Creta in India. It is still in discussion on whether should Maruti makes their move with such SUV in India.

The Vitara was previously sold in India under the name Grand Vitara, but back then, the compact SUV segment didn’t receive such great demand as recently. This model was soon phased out in the Indian market. The new-gen Vitara in the international market is recently given its facelift updates.

At the moment, we could look forward to the much-awaited third-generation WagonR which will be revealed on Jan 23. After that, Maruti will move forward to the Alto and Baleno updates, and then the debut of micro-SUV Concept S.
