2020 Mahindra Thar Automatic Confirmed [VIDEO]

Mahindra was expecting to launch the new-gen Mahindra Thar early this year. The upcoming model has been previewed several times ahead of its launch. However, due to the current pandemic situation, the official launch was delayed. The launch date was removed to the October this year. Recently, a new video that surfaced internet confirmed that the upcoming Mahindra Thar will be launched with an automatic gearbox option.

Throughout its history of over two decades, this is the first time that Mahindra Thar gets an automatic gearbox. Along with the new transmission option, the next-gen Thar will also be based on a new platform which will give the SUV extended width and length.

About the exterior, the Mahinda Thar will retain the traditional Jeep-like look with vertical slat grille and round headlights with LED DRLs. On the other hands, it also comes with some revised design elements like a refreshed bumper, projector headlights, and new alloy wheels. On the higher variants, the Mahindra Thar will come with a hardtop while the lower variants will keep the soft top design.

On the inside, the Mahindra Thar will see comprehensive updates with enhanced interior space and revised design. Thanks to the wider and longer platform, the Thar can pull out more room for the occupants. Additionally, the interior also gets a host of new features including a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Car compatibility. It is expected that the upcoming Thar will get cruise control, revised instrument cluster, and a new steering wheel. The higher variants are likely to get front-facing rear seats. In terms of safety equipment, the Mahindra Thar will come with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensor as standard.

It is expected that the new automatic option will be available on both the diesel and the petrol variants. Under the hood, the new Thar will be powered by either the 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine or a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the mStallion series. These engines are capable of generating a power output of 140 Ps/300 Nm and 187PS/380 Nm. Along with the new automatic gearbox, a 6-speed manual gearbox will be offered as standard on the Thar.
