The MY2021 Toyota RAV4 PHEV (or RAV4 Prime for US market) has recently been unveiled in Japan. The vehicle has impressive specs, especially in terms of fuel efficiency and driving range.

Toyota has recently unveiled the new RAV4 plug-in hybrid in Japan. The RAV4 is one of the best-selling Toyota cars in the entire world, with over 10 million units sold around the globe since its first debuted in 1994. To expand the line-up further and attract “greener” audience, Toyota has now introduced the plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4.

According to the Japanese car giant, the Toyota Hybrid System II powertrain on the RAV4 PHEV is capable of delivering a fuel economy of 4.5 litres per 100 km, which is roughly equivalent to 22.22 km per litre. It is powered by a 2.5-litre, inline-4, naturally aspirated petrol engine, capable of generating 178 PS and 228 Nm of max power and torque figures, respectively. This engine is paired to an 18.1 kWh battery, which in turn powers two electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear, thus effectively making this an All-Wheel-Drive SUV.

The total power output of the petrol/electric hybrid powertrain is claimed at 305 PS and the RAV4 Prime can reach 100 kmph from a standstill in just 6 seconds making it even quicker than the ‘regular’ petrol-powered variants. Charging the battery completely from zero via a regular power socket takes 5 hours and 30 minutes, which isn’t too much. Also, the Japan-spec model is capable of driving up to 95 kilometres on electric power alone.

Toyota will soon be launching the RAV4 PHEV in the North American markets as well, like the US and Canada, which is the biggest market for the SUV. In fact, it is the most popular SUV in the US. It will be dubbed the RAV4 Prime, like the Prius Prime, Toyota’s bestselling PHEV. Surprisingly, the US-spec model has an all-electric driving range of only 62 km.
