The Ford Cartesy Survey, carried out by Ford India across 10 cities, disclosed some important information about Indian road users’ attitudes and behaviour, thereby motivating the road users to better comply with the safety rules.

Ford recently conducted a survey on Indian road safety among on-road drivers, passengers and pedestrians across 10 cities in India to evaluate their behavior. In the total number of 1,613 respondents. 48% of the interviewees were private vehicles‘ owners while 52% were pedestrians and passengers.  Ford India also divided each city into five zones (East, West, South, North and Central) and representatives from each zone were chosen to be interviewed.

Commenting on the survey, Anurag Mehrotra, president & managing director, Ford India commented,

“From using technology for enhanced safety in Ford cars to encouraging drivers to be more courteous, we believe and make every effort to ensure every family travels safely.”

The survey is based on WHO 5-pillar approach, acknowledging the necessity to evaluate the behaviour of the drivers, passengers as well as the pedestrians for the purpose of bettering road safety. Under the framework of Caution, Compliance and Compassion, the Cartesy Survey represents Ford India’s constant endeavour to emphasize road users’ bad behaviour which prevents Indian roads from becoming safer and more orderly. To be more specific, the survey provides answers to some crucial questions such as “How should India -- the otherwise warm and hospitable -- respond to anxiety on roads in the new year? How should we rank in complying with traffic laws, exercising cautious while driving or being courteous to others on the road in 2019?”.

Indian traffic has been in serious conditions for a long time

The results of the survey are informative, intuitive and a little bit alarming, indicating that there is still much room for improvement. 51% of drivers are indifferent to seatbelt wearing and do not realize that it works harmoniously with the airbag setup; 45% do not conform to lane regulations or speed limits; 22% use their mobile phones when driving; 32% do not park their cars in the correct position; over 33% drive when they are not old enough; 41% would refuse to pay attention to an accident victim and take him/her to hospital. However, drivers between the age of 18 – 34 years old seem to be better in terms of caution, compliance and compassion. While people in cities like Ludhiana and Kolkata seem to pay more attention to safety rules than other cities, drivers in Delhi and Mumbai still need to improve their behaviour a lot. These results encourage Indian road users to be more cautious and pay more attention to safety laws.
