Maruti had to discontinue the diesel engine from its product lineup as it failed to meet new emissions norms. But it looks like they're close to making it BS-VI compliant and will be relaunched with the Ciaz and Ertiga.

Maruti Suzuki discontinued diesel engines from its entire vehicle lineup as it failed to meet the new BS-VI emissions. But it has come to light that a new 1.5-lite engine is nearing completion to be put into production. Reportedly the new engines will be offered with the Ertiga and the next generation Vitara Brezza. The BS-VI compliant diesel will be first available in the Ciaz and the Ertiga while this engine will also power the next-generation Vitara Brezza. The all-new Vitara Brezza is reported to be introduced in India just before Diwali this year. The new vehicle will likely be launched with a petrol engine and the diesel will be added to the range later.

The new BS-VI compliant 1.5-litre diesel may also power a new crossover, Codenamed D22. This new crossover is being developed jointly by Maruti and Toyota, and production will take place at Toyota’s Bidadi plant. Over the past decade, sales of diesel vehicles have seen a sharp decline. But diesel models still contribute heavily to the overall sales figures in India. Maruti Suzuki itself sold 5 lakh units of diesel vehicles in FY 2018-19. The Indian automaker believes that the re-introduction of diesel vehicles could help the company regain the market share it has lost since discontinuing diesel engines in its lineup.

Maruti had previously introduced the in-house developed 1.5-litre DDiS diesel powertrain in the Ciaz and the Ertiga MPV. In erstwhile BS-IV avatar, it produces 104 PS/225 Nm of max power and torque and it is expected that the BS-VI version will make similar figures. Maruti could also add a mild hybrid system to further improve its fuel efficiency figures.
