It is confirmed that Mahindra will end the six-seater version of the 2020 Mahindra Thar. From now on, there will be only the four-seater model of the Mahindra Thar on sale.

Mahindra Thar is one of the biggest hits in the Indian car market this year. The car has received overwhelming responses from domestic customers. The demand for this SUV is so high that it is basically sold out until May 2021. Mahindra is now ramping up the production to meet the increasing demand. At the moment, Mahindra Thar is offered at the introductory price of Rs 11.89 lakh. Mahindra recently confirmed the discontinuation of the six-seater configuration model on the Mahindra Thar’s range.

According to the new brochure for Mahindra Thar, Mahindra has decided to end the six-seater version of the Thar due to the safety concern as the six-seater model is considered less safe than the four-seater model. In related news, the homegrown car manufacturer sent its SUV to the Global NCAP test crash and gained four-star rating for both adult and occupant protection.

The six-seater Mahindra Thar model was available on the AX trim. On the six-seater version, the Thar came with side-facing seats which were equipped with lap seat belts. On the other hand, the standard four-seater model gets front-facing seats with proper seat belts instead. For this reason, the four-seater Mahindra Thar is believed to deliver a higher level of safety.

After the discontinuation of the AX four-seater trim, there will be only the AX Opt trim with four front-facing seats, instead. Also, Mahindra will focus more on the LX trim which generates more demand.

The four-seater Mahindra Thar was also the version used on the NCAP crash test. Talking about the safety test, Mahindra Thar would have received the full star rating if it was not for the unstable driver footwell area. This downside is the only reason Mahindra Thar to get a four-star rating. This SUV is equipped with safety features like ABS with EBD, dual airbags, seat belt reminder, ISOFIX child seat mounts, speed warning, emergency brake warning, passenger airbag deactivation switch. On the top-spec model, it comes with anti-theft alarm, speed sensing front door locks, stability program and roll-over mitigation.
