With the aims at taking the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai i20, Tata has been working on producing the Altroz to position it aggressively. Sitting above the Tiago, Tata Altroz is expected to be the new flagship of the home-grown carmaker.

Ahead of the launch in July 2019, Tata has recently announced to equip the car with 3 engine options including two petrol options and one diesel engine.

There are 3 engine options on offer

As per report, the base variants will be offered with the Tiago’s 85hp, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor. This engine is reported to generate 85bhp with a better power-to-weight ratio, compared to the Tiago since it weighs 15kg less.

The other petrol motor is derived from the Nexon SUV which is the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit. However, it will be slightly detuned to produce 102bhp and 140Nm of torque, which is 8bhp and 30Nm less than the Nexon SUV.

The diesel engine has not been officially confirmed by Tata Motors. However, it is expected to the 1.5-litre unit from the Nexon as well. It is likely to generate 90bhp, which is 20bhp less than its sibling compact-SUV offering.

Tata Motors is claimed to offer the Altroz’s engines with 'class-leading' performance thanks to the light weight.

To smoothen out the vibrations, Tata is scheduled to add a balancer shaft seen on the three-cylinder motor. Speaking about this, a Tata Motors powertrain engineer has stated,

"Refinement is important in this segment and the target is to have best-in-class NVH,"

Regarding the higher variants, the Nexon’s 1.2 turbo-petrol and 1.5 diesel with lower power and torque outputs will be equipped.
